Driving to and from Malaga Airport

The Southern access roads (MA-23) to the airport oopened in 2014. They leads directly to the MA-20 which is the dual carriageway that skirts past the west of Malaga city and joins the main A-7 motorway.

The planned Northern access roads which will join directly to the A-7 Coast road and inland Malaga by-pass is still in project stage. The Spanish Ministry of Transport awarded the detailed design contract for 1.5m € for the drafting of the layout and land expropriation in 2022.

The original entrance road that joins the old coast road (N-384), Avenida de Velázquez (MA-21) is still in place and can also be used to arrive at or leave the airport.

From the airport

From Málaga Airport westwards to Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Mijas, Marbella and Estepona via older ground level MA-21:

  • Leave the airport car hire offices or airport car parking and follow the blue signs to MA-21 Málaga  / Torremolinos heading south and with San Miguel Brewery on you right hand side. 
  • Take the right lane under the elevated blue roadsign marked 'MA-21 Torremolinos and A-7 Algeciras Cadiz' and bear right to join the M-21 highway heading east towards "Cadiz".
  • For Torremolinos and Benalmádena, keep in the left two lanes on the MA-21 which becomes the N-340a Torremolinos by-pass. 
  • For other destinations 500m after passing the end of the airport runway on you right, keep in the right hand lane which passes under the elevated blue roadsign 'A-7 Benalmaden Algeciras'. This right hand lane forks right and up the hill to joint the A-7 motorway. 
  • For Fuengirola, follow the motorway stay in the right lanes when you reach the toll road (autopista de peaje) at km 221.
  • For Marbella take right lanes onto the Autopista de Peaje (AP-7) straight to Marbella. The toll coasts about 4.80€  (7.85€ Easter week and 01 June to 30 September). If you prefer not to pay the toll for Marbella and Estepona  stay in the right lanes when you reach the toll road (autopista de peaje) at km 221 as if you were going to Fuengirola.
  • For Estepona, keep driving around Marbella. Follow the signs to Estepona. After the “Nagüeles” exit, stay to the left lanes if you want to take the AP-7 toll road to Estepona town and beyond. The toll costs 3.30€  (5.300€ Easter week and 01 June to 30 September). For Puerto Banus and Nueva Andalucia do not take the toll road. 

 

From Málaga Airport westwards to Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Mijas, Marbella and Estepona via elevated MA-23:

  • Leave the airport car hire offices or car parking and follow the signs to Málaga up the ramp on to the elevated dual carriage MA-23 link road which runs at the back of the car hire depots. 
  • If you were parked in the Express Car Park by the arrivals drop off area, you will already be at the higher level. Drive along this link road and turn right at the roundabout along the evelvated dual carriage MA-23 link road ink road which runs at the back of the car hire depots.
  • Take the right fork on to the M-20 motorway heading towards "Cadiz"
  • For Torremolinos and Benalmádena, take first exit to past the Plaza Mayor shopping centre to join the old coast road (N-340a) to your destination. 
  • For Fuengirola, follow the motorway stay in the right lanes when you reach the toll road (autopista de peaje) at km 221.
  • For Marbella take right lanes onto the Autopista de Peaje (AP-7) straight to Marbella. The toll coasts about 4.80€  (7.85€ Easter week and 01 June to 30 September). From Málaga Airport Eastwards to Málaga, Granada, Sevilla, Cordoba, Almería:

  • Leave the airport car hire pickup or main car parking and follow the signs to Málaga up the ramp on to the elevated dual carriage MA-23 link road which runs at the back of the car hire depots. 
  • If you were parked in the Express Car Park by the arrivals drop off area, you will already be at the higher level. Drive along this link road and turn right at the roundabout along the evelvated dual carriage MA-23 link road ink road which runs at the back of the car hire depots.
  • Keep on the link road as it crosses over the coast road and it will spiral round and down to join to the M-20 motorway heading towards “Málaga”.
  • Watch for the two main exit to Málaga city either the Avenida de Velazquez to the port area or the Avenida de Andalucia to the Alhameda and city centre.
  • Continue round Málaga city the MA-20 merges with the A-7  a little further on you reach a fork junction where you can choose either left lanes to follow the coast towards Almería, which will take you to the Nerja amd Eastern Costa del Sol and the Axarquía, or right lanes to head inland to Granada, Seville or Córdoba.

Driving to Málaga Airport

  • Take the A-7 highway and follow the signs towards Málaga.
  • If you are coming from inland or Nerja, stay in the right hand lane as you pass by Málaga. Follow the signs to the airport.
  • If you are coming from Marbella and the west on the A-7, 5km before the airport take the right lanes at the fork onto the MA-20.  Follow the "Aeropuerto" yellow airport sign onto the MA-23 new link road that brings you directly into the arrival drop off area. Follow signs for longer term parking or Car Hire drop off at the lower level.
