70 km - 1 hour
Leave Malaga
airport by car, driving very carefully and as you leave the
airport, after the roundabout, keep in the right hand lane. The
San Miguel brewery is now a landmark on your right. To travel west
along the coast filter right on to the main N340 coast road.
For a detour to the City
of Malaga keep in the left hand lane leaving the airport which
takes you over the overbridge and then east along the N340 6 km
into the city centre.
After 2km to the right hand lane joins
the Costa del Sol Motorway ( no toll ) slightly inland and hugging
the side of the mountain. There are good views of the coast from
this section of road. Venta El Higueron ( exit 217km ) has a commanding
view and is a good place to stop, take in the view, fill the car
at the petrol station and start to enjoy the trip. Or make a side
trip to Mijas Village .
The motorway runs into the new toll
'Autopista del Sol.' This road will save you time if heading for
Marbella, San Pedro/ Ronda or Estepona and beyond. For more information
on this motorway visit www.autopistadelsol.com.
If you don't take the motorway you
will find yourself on the old road which passes through Torremolinos
and Benalmadena and skirts
the coast. This road although slower will make you feel on holiday.
Turn off the motorway to skirt Fuengirola.
From the bypass you will see the Aquapark. Mac Donalds, and Dunns
Stores. On leaving look out for the 10 th Century restored Castillo
Sohail on your left. The road now winds through some small coves.
Some of the bends on this stretch are sharper than you think so
be careful. El faro the lighthouse is on your right.
This is now Mijas
Costa ( the part of Mijas municipality which is on the coast
) this also includes the popular resort area Calahonda.
At this point you may notice the central
reservation painted blue and white. Now you are in Marbella.
The main coast road bypasses the town. It joins the old road again
just by Puerto Banus, the famous
marina and pleasure zone. You will also see on the left in front
of Banus the 'El Corte Inglés' shopping center. a user friendly
area for tourists to stock up with provisions, or buy those forgotten
items.
Now you arrive at San Pedro de Alcántara,
a modern town just set back form the beach, where it has a new long
promenade.
At the traffic lights (first on the
road ) turn right for the San Pedro to Ronda
itinerary. Straight on to continue the San Pedro to San Roque itinerary.
Turn left to go down to the the beach.
