Morroco and Spain set for tunnel link

Postby Pigeon Tim » Tue Mar 13, 2007 3:54 pm

Plans to link Europe to Africa via a tunnel are gathering pace.

The Moroccan government has been holding talks with its Spanish counterparts to start the project, which would consist of a railway beneath the Strait of Gibraltar carrying freight, passengers and cars.

Work is expected to start in 2008.

The article that I read about this said the completed project would cost 900,000€! This seems a little optimistic to me.

Could this be just a cynical ploy on the part of the Spanish government to simplify and speed up the flowthrough of Africans to other parts of the world!!

When and not if this goes ahead it will be built by experienced expats like us. We are building an LNG GBS (Offshore LNG Plant) here at La Linea when finished it will be floated out to the Adriatic. We started in 2005 and are only one month behind and have modules being built in Sweden, USA, Singapore and Italy ready to bring to Spain so we can put it all together. The next one will be built in Mexico and that's where I will be headed so when this tunnel starts expect an influx of expat tunnel specialists from all over the world descending on Tarifa using Eastern European labour.

I wonder if it will be forecast to cost 3 and 6 pence to build and be completed in a year but actually cost 8 billion more than initially thought and overun by four years.

I meant the Med tunnel but it applies to almost any big works nowadays, Olympics, New roads, bridges,Trident replacement(Quad rant?), Wembley Stadium etc etc. No one gives a damn.

You are wrong as you refer 001 projects and they are/were build and design, they are always late and over budget, design and built are on time and within budget!

12 years ago they were talking about the san pedro de alcantara tunnel (only underneath a road) and that still hasn't started in earnest.

Roads by design have a maximum life of 10 years then the traffic numbers become unknown so if it was designed 12 years ago and still not built it will probably (there will always be a design and build probability here in Spain  ) never go ahead without being designed again!
