This years first swallows and cuckoos

Postby olive » Thu Mar 15, 2007 5:49 pm

Has anyone seen or heard their first ones yet this year? Our first swallows were on the 8th March but then we are inland. The local paper said that the first ones had been seen at Gib in Mid Feb this year (climate change apparently).

Haven't seen or heard a cuckoo yet. Last year was the 26th March.

Swallows arrived in the Axarquia at the end of Feb, haven't got to the UK yet though.

First year in our cortijo there was no glass in the upstairs windows and the swallows had been nesting in and out for years ( apprently they come back to the same place each year) This time last year we had all new windows in and they were less than happy that they couldnt get in (the noise was terrible!!) Same thing has just happend this week they are back again and cant get in and oh boy they are letting us know about it!

They came back early this year - have been trying to build nests since mid Feb - we knocked one down before they finished it and are trying to keep them out. They built 3 nests last year, one inside our front entrance door (which we usually keep open) and 2 inside the garage - have been doing it for years apparently. But they make such a mess  Hoping to keep them away this year. I love them to bits but don´t want all the mess again.
I used to be indecisive but now I´m not so sure.

If you like swallows listen to

"When the swallows come back to Capistriano"

By The Ink Spots

This doesn't refer to the development in Nerja, but to the old spanish mission south of LA

I heard first cuckoo of the year today, 29th March, up in the mountains near Competa.

Swallows have been here about two weeks.
