Nerja or Fuengirola??? Which is better for first timers. Thanks.

Two very different places.

Nerja is not in the middle of a 30 mile long concrete jungle, Fuengirola is.

You need to come out and see both and decide for yourself.

I prefer Nerja although they are both touristy. Fuengirola looks like Eastern Europe although it is still a very working Spanish town and has a decent English theatre. I would imagine Fuengirola is livelier at night in winter.

Nerja is a more relaxing place but if you're after lively then Fuengirola would be better.
Good public transport lnks from Fuengirola as well.

At least in Fuengirola the beach front doesn't smell like the worst public toilet you have ever visited. :shh:

We were at Salon beach in Nerja a couple ofdays ago - crystal clear sea, not smelly, absolutely idyllic. We love Nerja.

Perhaps it won't smell so much in winter  Nerja has been talking about improving it's sewage system for decades. I suppose you get used to it if living there.

Sounds like they have improved it then.

At least they have started building the new sewerage plant after years of waiting. Until they finish it they will continue dumping it straight into the sea.

Nothing would persuade me to go into the water on any of the Nerja beaches.

We didn't go in, it was too cold but we've been in every year in the Summer. We live up in the mountains and I have a very keen sense of smell, so if Nerja was smelly, I would have noticed.

We do avoid going in the sea in the Summer on days when the *beep* slick is wafting about :D

Are you hiring a car or are you going to be dependent on local transport.?
This could be an issue

Nimrod, 4 ladies travelling, no we are not renting a car. Got around Ireland and Scotland totally dependant on buses and trains...No problems. Its expensive to get an international licence and insurance. Rather leave the driving to the professionals and anyone who may want to show us around we are open to that too.

Maggie,
In that case you might be better off with previous suggestions rather than Nerja.
Nerja is more sedate but public transport better in Fuengirola or La Cala de Mijas.
Perhaps you should try a two centre holiday?
