Andalucia or Andalusia?

Postby Spain_newbie » Tue Jan 03, 2017 2:10 pm

Is Andalucia the correct, or Spanish spelling? And Andalusia the English variation?

Hi Spain_newbie,

Yes, Andalucía (with an accent on the i) is the correct Spanish spelling; Andalusia is the anglicised word.

For some reason, this reminded me of a story in one of Clive James' autobiograhical volumes. He flew to Italy in pursuit of a lady friend and was then perplexed at the railway station when trying to buy a ticket to Florence, which for some unexplained reason had been renamed as Firenze while he was en route from London.

I cringe every time I hear Tom Jones sing Anda Loosia, although it's a nice song. And if I hear one more tourist in sock & sandals say Benal Madeena, I'll scream!!

(sorry - the song is The Boy From Nowhere, from the movie Matador, for those who don't know)

A bit like Com - péta as the girl on a recent Place in the Sun kept calling it. Mind you she also called Benamagosa
Benan-magosa .... the whole programme was pretty annoying really.

Yes you're right about a place in the sun. You'd think they would do a bit research.

In English it has to be Pronounced Andalusia, doesn't it?

In most other parts of Spain it's pronounced something like 'Andaluthea'

It's normal to pronounce places differently depending on the language
The French pronounce their capital 'Pareee'. The English, 'Paris' with a slight stress on the first syllable and the Spanish, 'Pariiiis' with a rising stress on the second syllable.

All correct depending on the language.

I like to pronounce Fuengirola 'Fingerola' because that's how my wife use to hear it pronounced by people asking for information when she worked at the Spanish tourist office in London.

Round these parts Nerja is often pronounced Nairka.

I was sitting at a bar in Torremolinos a few years ago and overheard an Irishman saying that his wife had gone to visit Bella madonna. :lolno:

Still makes me chuckle thinking of it now.

Dont ge me started on the nerka brigade (its a J not a Q). Or even better the fridge e lee arna (frigiliana)

I remember a report on expats on channel 4 news during brexit and the reporter was in benalmadena and how he pronounced it ive never heard before or since! I think he just made up a totally new word. Weeks later i saw him filming a report at the Gib border and was so desperate to remember this obscure word he had created but nope couldnt remember.

There is no 'J' sound in Spanish though....it is more like an 'H' but clearing your throat as you say it...writing it as a 'k' gets close, like 'Rioja'.
Spanish pronunciation is easy once you learn it, as everything follows rules, very unlike English.

Yes, hence Granada should never be pronounced "Granahda" as a's are always short in Spanish.

And English pronunciation can cause plenty of problems for Spaniards. Just watching the Man Utd. match on tdp, and the commentators mentioned that "Seer" Alex Ferguson is in the crowd, Chris Smalling (pronounced as in Smacking) is playing in defence, and one of the Reading players goes by the name of Lyam Kelly.

I think English pronunciation is more difficult for Spaniards than Spanish pronunciation is for British people to learn, because as Peteroldracer said, pronunciation always follows the same rules in Spanish whereas in English it's all over the place. How would a Spaniard ever know how Cholmondely or Featherstonehaugh should be pronounced in English?

On the other hand, Spanish grammar is probably more complicated than English.

More examples of why English is difficult

There's a strong wind and I wind up my watch before I go to bed.

I live in Spain and the match is live

To produce produce.

I read the newspaper every day and I have read the newspaper today.

With Nerja, the 'J' is quite easy. It's the 'R' I find difficult. It's difficult for a Londoner to remember to roll them. I would imagine a Scot would have less problems

Very true: perro / pero cause me problems!
The second commentator has obviously es-potted* his colleague's mistake with Chris Smalling - his name now rhymes with Starling! How on earth are the poor fellows supposed to know how we say it?

*There don't appear to be any es-panish words that es-tart with an S followed by a consonant, hence we get Es-Potify. So I'm surprised they're not calling him Es-mawling!

When we moved to Spain I bought a Ford Escort.
The dealer spoke in English for my benefit and called the car a Ford Scort.
