Strange Nighttime Bird/Animal Sound
Is it possible to post a sound on the forum
Just recently here in the campo we've had what can only be described as hoot/bassy single note whistle, googled & youtubed owls etc and listened to their evening calls but they don't sound anything like it.It has been happening most evenings and more or less continues right through until daybreak. It's just a single note lasting about two seconds with a slight pitch variation.
Any Ideas

Re: Strange Nighttime Bird/Animal Sound
It could be the Andalucian Tinitus bird
Re: Strange Nighttime Bird/Animal Sound
We used to get one at certain times of the year. Was told it was a nightingale or a night jar. I liked hearing it.

Re: Strange Nighttime Bird/Animal Sound
Nightingales have a very melodic and tuneful song, and there are two types of nightjars around here. One has a churring sound (like a big cat purring!) and the other has a distinctive chuka chuka chuka sound .... almost like someone hitting metal.
I think it is an owl too. We have it here .... we call it the 'hoo bird' as it just makes a single, deep hoooo sound as you describe tellboy. We have Little Owls that sit on our electricity line but listening to their call on Youtube, it seems a higher pitch to what we hear at night. You can tell that I suffer from insomnia!

I would say nightjar.
We have got a nightingale this year. Thankfully it has been absent for the last two. Not sure I would call it tuneful or melodic. Just a racket. There is a four hour you tube recording. Leave that playing while you are trying to sleep!

If you a bit of a birdwatcher like me, then the BBC's Tweet of the day series is quite good. Still can't find the 'hoo bird' but here is the Nightjar that churrs

and the rednecked nightjar that goes chuka chuka

That is the one we hear most as it sits on a fence post nearby or on our pylon and calls for hours! We've had to go out and shoo it away some nights.

Ask in the facebook wild life Axerquia birds and wildlife. You can join that and ask what the members, it is a good group to belong to because they posta lot about wildlife in Andalucia and there are some very very knowledgeable people on there and someone will know what it is for sure.

So what do you think Telboy, or have you abandoned us?
Listen to scops owl
Listen to scops owl
Re: Strange Nighttime Bird/Animal Sound
If tellboy's bird is the same as ours, then the Scops is too high pitched. Ours sounds a bit like a tawny owl, a deeper note but just a single 'hooo' at regular intervals.

Sorry for not getting back sooner - Thanks for the replies
It's definitely a Scop Owl, listened to chrissyboy and White Horse links, our bird sound is really loud and slightly lower pitched as Wicksey suggested - probably amplified by our valley location.
Nice-one Scotty
Cheers

Well that's Gas ! I heard the same owl two weeks ago in the middle of the nit as I pointed "Percy at the porcelain" . . . . . . Good to find out what it's called.

It's taken me all this time to finally identify our 'hoo bird'Wicksey wrote: I think it is an owl too. It was sitting on the electricity line at dusk last night and was clearly a long eared owl. Glad to have solved that mystery at last

I've been listening to that bird for 25 years but I'm getting divorced now
