Around the Cadiz, Chiclana, Jerez, districts you don't see second hand car lots
I think you'll find it is quite easy to buy a second hand car in the Chiclana area these days Martin, and I know of at least two used car lots in the town itself. As for a guide, I think the nearest equivalent to Glasses that I have come across is the monthly (1.20 euros) "Guia Util del Automovil". It lists many new and second hand prices in more or less the same layout as Glasses though not as exhaustive and only goes back five years for second hand cars. I bought a copy today at El Corte Ingles in Jerez (the one near Le Roy Merlins). Most motor magazines e.g "Coches de Ocasion" have adverts for used cars that you can also get prices from and an internet site for reference is www.hipermotor.com Hope that helps.

The equivalent to Glasses Index in Spain is GUIA del Comprador de Coches y 4X4. It is printed monthly, costs E1.20 and available at most newsagents or equivalent.

GUIA del Comprador de Coches y 4X4 is the same as Parkers guide in the UK. I am a lHD specialist and i love it when people turn up with parkers guide as it over values vehcles by up to 25%. In Spain there is a book for trade values but it is only available to insurance companys and gestors. There is no Glasses Guide.

eh - that is worth knowing ... thanks - so if I work on GUIA del Comprador de Coches y 4X4 minus 25% - will I be in the right parish or is that on a sliding scale for say the first 5 years or across all the value

as the vehicles become older the gap becomes smaller but they are always 10% at least over book value

Very emotive subjects, money, family, as well as cars.

The second hand market as well has wildly differing values area by area are a great subject for discussion. True, second mano is caveate emptor but increasingly popular. Prices in Malaga provence for example are much higher than say, Granada or Cordoba and well worth checking out further afield.

Spanish bureaucracy is awesome and would put most people off doing anything about anything. Importing a car from anywhere, including UK is an expensive pain in the butt and one is best to buy when here. One reasons second hand cars are more expensive in Spain than the UK is that in the UK there is a huge market in COMPANY and FLEET CARS, not so in Spain where a company car is a rare bonus and taxable as well as income, so less cars in the market, prices up.

I will no longer own a car younger than 1990 myself,. I now hate plastic, complex electronic nightmare, multi-airbag, over priced crap. Solid steel and careful driving now days. Current daily drive is a 1987 BMW 320i auto, saloon bought 6 years ago for 1.200€ now conservatively valued (by average selling prices) at 4.400+€, that is the way to go. I do have a 2001 MB A170 but off road due to gearbox failure, again, and as with most modern cars it cost more to repair than it's worth but can't get rid of it as no one wants a buggered car.

Move to Spain, if you really must, and buy one here, what you buy or will be relative to resale value later anyway.
All comments should be taken in the spirit intended, Jack Danial's is fine.

One reason why second hand cars in Spain seem expensive is because cars in the UK can be bought with huge discounts, many at nearly 25%. As a result any comparisons are skewed by this difference. Also because most cars are bought on very cheap PCP deals there is a huge glut of used cars in the UK. Huge glut equals low prices.

And people change their cars every five mins to keep up with the jones's in the uk. Creating a market.Spanish certainly dont care about theirs or anyone elses as much.amazed me at the lack of second hands in big dealerships when we first came. Just one of many things that show how economies are very different
