‘Local Heroes’ Comes to Ronda – Eustory Launches its Third Competition

The third Spanish edition of Eustory – the history competition for young Europeans – will present a new theme for 2010, "Local Heroes", on January 21st.

On Thursday 21st January European representatives will present this year's Eustory Competition in Spain within the Eustory General Assembly held at the Convento de Santo Domingo in Ronda (Malaga). Winners of last year's competition will present their winning entries.

The Eustory Competition is aimed at young people under 21 years of age enrolled in their last three years of secondary school or adult education throughout Spain. The theme of the competition changes every two years. This year the theme is "Local Heroes", be they celebrated or as yet undiscovered.

The competition is managed in Spain by the Real Maestranza de Ronda, a cultural institution (known in English as the Royal School of Cavalry) in Ronda. Created in 1573, it is a non-profit organization that runs the horse riding school and bullring in Ronda.

Eustory has a long history in Europe. The Eustory competition originated in Post-War Germany so as to give young people the chance to study why Nazism came about and counter the abuse of history as an ideological weapon. Eustory views history as a workshop for intercultural understanding. The competition has now spread to 19 countries throughout Europe.

Nobel Peace Prize Winner and former Finnish President, Martti Ahtisaari, said of the role of Eustory: "Peace and freedom in Europe are still put to the test today by hatred and violence. Very often, the causes are rooted in our history. If we Europeans want to establish a peaceful common future, we have to talk openly about our past. The Eustory network offers young Europeans the chance to take
part in an honest dialogue about history, to reflect on current problems and to think in terms of alternatives. Thus, it makes an important contribution to our common European efforts toward peace. Integrating Europe is an historic project"

The aim of Eustory is to give young people the chance to discover their personal or local history in order to understand the present and shape the future.

When: 21st of January 2010 – 19:30
