New generic Top Level Domains of the Internet - Get ready for dot anything

By Chris Chaplow Vice Chair, Business Constituency, ICANN (Internet Cooperation for Assigned Names and Numbers)

At present there are 22 Top Level Domanins 's on the internet such as .com .net .org .info .biz etc. in addition to the two letter country codes .es .de .uk. etc.

On the 12th January 2012, following six years of open stakeholder policy development, ICANN opened applications for anybody to operate their own top level domain. This may be a brand such as .canon, a new concept such as .bank, a city such as .berlin, or a community such as .gay.

Those who have now decided not to make an application should be aware of this dramatic change in the way the internet will be used as 22 top level domains becomes 500 or perhaps 1.000. Nobody knows the number until the applications close on 12th April 2012.

How will this affect Internet users and professionals? How will this affect business protect their intellectual property from cyber squatting and avert customer confusion?
