Costs to offset CGT

Postby Superplonk » Thu Jan 30, 2020 3:28 pm

Having just bought a house, I am thinking ahead and wondering what expenses are allowable against CGT at the time of an eventual sale. I assume general maintenance (painting, plumbing repairs...) doesn't count, but what about a new boiler or solar panels?

It is a self assessment system so you can claim whatever you like but you must be in a position to justify the expenses you are claiming if you have an inspection by AEAT. I would doubt that a new boiler would be accepted because this would be classed as maintenance rather than an improvement. Solar panels may be accepted but no guarantee.

Whatever you try to claim you must have proper receipts with VAT and the provider's name and CIF number.

And a building licence for major additions.
