Best supermarket wine

Postby Flashman » Sun Jun 16, 2019 3:26 pm

Hi folks, we’re coming out next weekend and usually stock up at Mercadona, carrefour or Aldi. Any recommendations from you residents as to the best vfm wine available. What are your regular favourites?

You mention VFM - what price range are you looking at? Red or white?

For whites we like Aldi's Casa la Luna Rueda and also their Monestario (I think) from memory it's a Chardonnay/ Gewerztraminer. For reds we tend to buy Faustino VI from Lidl or Faustino VII from Mercadona as we only really like Rioja. I think they're around 3.50€, the Rueda is only 2.29€.

I find most red wine that is +€3 in Spain generally.
I sometimes go to Dia as they sell high end wines which can be €6 to €10 and the second bot be discounted 50% or 70%.
I end up with really good wine for about €6 per bot. I only do this if i am trying to impress.
Me i drink anything except water...

I am sure you are aware that wine here in Spain is considerably cheaper than in the UK.
A few years ago we were in the UK visiting our niece and her husband.
He produced a bottle of Spanish wine which he liked and it was, he said, just under £9 a bottle.
I said I also like it but I only pay under €4 a bottle for it in our local supermarket.
Cheers

You can't really go wrong with any of the Lidl wines as long as they are not the really cheap ones. The ones I like are the red Tulga Joven from Toro (2.25), Mezquirez Navarra Rose (1.79) and the white Verdejo from Rueda called Visigodo.. There is an adequate cheap Rueda Verdejo called Oristan, reduced on Saturday from 1.89 to 1.49.

I will give that Lidl rose a go. Just come back from UK and been consuming Gallo rose. Very nice and not horribly acidic like most Spanish offerings.

We used to go to Lidl in Marbella as they often had Australian and Chile red. Not really a white wine drinker but we get lots sent us by a New Zealand friend and I sometimes have some. My favourites are Hawkes Bay and Cloudy Bay. I can't drink cheap white but don't mind cheap red (after the second glass) Ribera is my favourite Spanish area.

Recently was in Paris and I noticed they had lots of reds around €3

A blast from the past. A thread started by poor Ken, sadly departed. Informative and funny.

The 5 litre plastic bottle of red from Mercadona’s ok - at least it is after the first 30 minutes!

Since we moved over here to spain some 18 years ago we have enjoyed many many bottles of the Monte Plogar Cariñena red wine from Lidl. It originally cost 1.69 euros and is now 1.79 here on mallorca. We originally thought it was called Crianza due to the labelling and our ignorance. The label is now redesigned and is quite plain. Quite quaffable!!!
