Intelsat 907 / Satback Update - Major News!!!

Postby satandpcguy » Thu Oct 10, 2019 10:40 pm

Intelsat have today launched their first "Mission Extension Vehicle, or MEV" which can dock with satellites and take over propulsion.

The first test for the MEV is for the Intelsat 901 satellite, which is running low on fuel. The Intelsat 901 satellite launched in June 2001 aboard an Ariane 4 rocket for a mission originally designed to last at least 13 years. The MEV is expected to extent the life by a further 5 years.

Then, and I quote (from https://spaceflightnow.com/2019/10/08/s ... or-launch/ ) :
After testing, The MEV’s fuel-efficient, xenon-fed ion thrusters will steer the Intelsat 901 satellite toward a new operating post at 27.5 degrees west longitude.
So it looks like Intelsat 901 will be moving to 27.5 West and taking over I907s operations sometime in Jan / Feb / March 2020, just as I907s expected life span comes to an end....will need to look at 901s footprints to see what type of beam SATBACK goes onto...assuming the MEV docks fine with I901, and the tests work, and can move it to 27.5w

Beams : I901 has two "spot beams"...along with a few "wide beams"...( https://www.satbeams.com/satellites?norad=26824 ) so if Satback moves onto those Spot beams, we shall have to wait and see what their reach is...
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it

Thanks for the information.
So we will have to wait and see if we can still be able get "i907" here in Spain.

Looking at the I901 beams, the 2 spot beams are pointed at the Caribbean. I assume they would have to stay there. On I907 the Satbak transponder is already on a spot beam centred on the UK, so it would seem likely that they would have to move to a normal beam.

I think it means " wait and see if you can still get i907 after the new satellite is in place"

Sounds really bad. How can you have a spot beam covering both Caribbean and Spain? I mean thats a whole Atlantic's worth....

By 901 "taking over 907 operations " do they just mean 907 left to float into outer space when its fuel depleted?

Satellites can have multiple beams, so can have multiple spot beams.

They will do with I907 what they are doing with I901, ir add an MEV to it and move it to another location where it is required to take over another Intelsat satellite...

You won't know until it is in its new position.

I'm saving up for a subscription to TVMucho just in case. I can't miss Eggheads.

The docking of the MEV with Intelsat-901 has been completed successfully...

Anyone have any idea when we will lose Intelsat 907/ Sat and PC guy? It is great to still have tv via satellite at this difficult time. We have a Magbox for internet viewing, but at the moment our broadband is running like treacle and tv pretty unwatchable. Guess because everyone is keeping in touch by internet. I am keeping everything crossed that we will keep satellite.

I907 will be replaced with I901 soon....when it gets into place...
When I901 takes over, you can expect all I907 services to move to I901.
Then I907 goes off to gets its MEV and then off to other things.
The key issue, as mentioned in the first post, is what beam / frequencies the "Satback" service will be on...and thus will it continue to be received in areas that it should not be able to be received in!!

Has anyone had any problems with receiving Intelsat today ? Mine no longer seems to work, just checking if it is problem with my kit or the satellite down for the changeover to 901.
