Suspicious phone call

Postby jonbar.1 » Fri Jun 23, 2023 4:34 pm

We all get the occasional selling calls ( who hang up as soon as you answer).
Today I had a very strange one:
The woman caller ( in Spanish) said: "hello,(and used my actual name)".
She said she was from Banco Sabadell.( this is my bank).
When I asked her to speak in English she hung-up.
This was obviously NOT the bank.
Normally I ignore weird calls but I am concerned that she used my name and the name of my bank.
Has anyone any idea how she got those two pieces of information?
Have checked our account and all seems OK.
( I will be calling the bank on Monday but am very worried  )
Thankyou.
JB

Why wait until Monday? You can call them 24/7 to report your suspicions.

Thanks Francis.
I didn't know about the 24/7 number.
I spoke to a chap.He didn't think it was a.problem as I had given them no info.
Unfortunately he had no answer for how they had my name & bank.
I would, out of pure curiosity, like to know where they got it.
Thanks for your input Francis

Hi jonbar.1,

" would, out of pure curiosity, like to know where they got it".............lists......... every time you go on line your/mine data is being collected,

Companies have 'partners' and sell on these lists.

If a phone call isn't on your contacts list.........don't answer it, if you do the caller will have a 'live' number and then maybe match it on a 'list'.

Hi Enrique.
I usually answer calls, but if I don't recognise the number,I say nothing and hang up.
Are you suggesting just let it ring and do nothing?
It might be from a genuine source ( eg: the Health Service) .We've had many calls from our Health Centre over the years, hardly ever from the same number.
I understood that some sort of national protection against unwanted calls was about to be employed.
Is this true?
Cheers JB

Hi jonbar.1,

"It might be from a genuine source ( eg: the Health Service) .We've had many calls from our Health Centre over the years, hardly ever from the same number."..............a difficult one,

On my phone it shows the "area" the call is from.............so easier to ignore or not.

I find this does not help as for example Cajamar has a main office in Valencia and customer services have called from there, and the centre of the Spanish admin is of course Madrid.
I used to cough to disguise a [email protected] I f@rt to disguise a cough.

Very often the ( selling) calls are computerised. They call randomly until they get a response; hence, sometimes, when you pick up the phone there's no-one there.
I usually answer the call and simply say"hello" ( i refrain from any Spanish).I do not say another word.At that point they cut off the call.

Hi jonbar.1,

"Very often the ( selling) calls are computerised "..............let it ring for a bit and someone else will pick it up.

I thought that they call a few numbers and they talk to the first one who picks up. That is why very often nobody talks to you because they have already started a conversation with someone else.
I have to pick up all calls because I have a business and when Amazon delivery drivers call it´s always a Barcelona number.

Rather than just let the phone ring, which is annoying,I would just slide the "red" phone icon to reject the call.
I'd like to see where the call is coming from before reject it.
