growing daffodil bulbs and other bulbs in Spain!
My hubby and i were wondering last night if any of you successfully grow Daffodils from bulbs?
I dont suppose they would come up at the same time as they do in UK due to the climate here..
Any tips/pointers would be great,i fancy planting some if any of you are successful

I've tried Dafs many times ... they reluctantly come up the first year of planting but then nothing. I suspect its likely to be the soil, Its quite high in pH here.
I have had excelent sucess with Hyacynths. I initially buy bulbs for christmas flowering indoors and then plant out in the clump when they have gone over. There is a magnificent display of them in the border right now, and in a still evening the perfume is heady. They do need some wind protection else the heads just get blown down
Crocus have never done any thing

My daffs are superb! The narcissi started flowering about 2 weeks ago and are still going strong. the bigger daffs will emerge very soon. They're about the only things that I can successfully grow! I did try tulips but something dug them all up...

Re: growing daffodil bulbs and other bulbs in Spain!
it may be an old wives tale but i thought there was a connection with a cold snap that made the daffs start to grow ??
if its true it makes sense why they dont do much on the coastline as the temp rarely dips like it does inland....
if its wrong ignore me.....

Surprisingly, perhaps, daffodils are actually a tropical and subtropical plant by origin, although they also do grow well in temperate climates like the UK. So yes, I'm afraid the cold snap theory is definitely an old wives tale! However, all plant flowering cycles relate to a combination of temperature and dampness, so flowering would be triggered by a recognised pattern in one or both (such as an increase in temperature by a few degrees, sustained over a number of days, following a similar sustained drop in temperature). Plants become accustomed to the levels in their area, so the actual temperature (or amount of dampness) may not be particularly significant.Trato Hecho wrote: ↑Sun Mar 07, 2010 9:52 pm it may be an old wives tale but i thought there was a connection with a cold snap that made the daffs start to grow ??

In the mountains around Ubrique and Grazalema there are hosts of tazetta type daffodils growing by the roadside. There are also clumps along the river near Coin.
I suspect that they need a bit of moisture.
Tazettas like soleil d'or and paperwhite are generally thought to be a bit tender for most of the UK, so probably reasonable that they like Spain. (Same applies to me)
