Abandoned dog

Postby DannyB » Mon Jan 08, 2024 2:08 pm

We have a holiday home in the campo outside Tolox. Over the weekend we have been adopted by an abandoned dog. He has no collar and no chip. He is a lovely friendly chap, a young healthy looking male. He is a typical local hunting type dog, like a small, leggy German Shepherd. I can find no sign of anyone looking for him. I have emailed all the rescue centres I can find. We are returning to the UK at the weekend so need a solution. Anyone have any ideas?, or anyone need a dog!!!?

Do you know for certain no chip?

Your fall back plan, horrible as it might sound , is to feed it well till you leave and then let it take its chances. The campo is full of such dogs sadly.

We rescued a similar dog ten years ago. Vet said he had been abandoned due to health issues…… since then he has cost us a small fortune in vets fees which we don’t begrudge. Two visits so far this year. 123 and 86 euros.

In the end we took him to the Policia Locale who happily took him away , with absolutely no fuss or paperwork. Hopefully he will find a home , but anything is better than starving to death.
Have read up since about the Podenco dogs. A lot of them are treated as being disposable and chucked out when too old or not good enough.
This one was remarkably friendly and personable.

Result. Well done persevering.

They have a great temperament and can jump a great height from a standstill. In our village a dad had his 13 year old despatch an under performing hunting dog with a shotgun.

Slowly attitudes are changing.

They won't change if the younger generation think its OK to shoot a dog. Of course, hunting dogs are immune from all the new animal welfare laws, and they are the ones that often need protection most. When we go on our regular trips to Lanzarote we walk the dogs at the local animal charity, and it is full of huge Canarian Podencos. We were disappointed that, on a small island with few hunting grounds, they treat their dogs just as badly as here.
