"Potential unwanted app found"

Postby Wicksey » Sun Jan 28, 2024 11:26 am

Windows security has thrown up this message several times regarding PUA:Win32/uTorrent, threat level low.
Affected items are ... appdata/users/Roaming/uTorrent/uTorrentexe

I do have uTorrent as an app but I don't use it now and tried to uninstall it but a message came up saying I don't have permission to access it. I have the Roaming/uTorrent files in my Files area of my computer, but I guess deleting them all will not solve the problem if I cannot uninstall the entire app properly.

Although I have taken the recommended action via the Windows security to remove the threats, (it has blocked one item, the other two offered the chance to uninstall9, it is taking forever to actually do anything (just blue dots travelling across the screen a bit like the little blue wheel that shows something is happening, but not sure what). Is this something that will take hours to remedy and I just have to wait

Hi Wicksey,

First kill it off

Download Revouninstaller free...................

https://www.revouninstaller.com/product ... ller-free/

Sounds like you need to bring Windows up in save mode...........

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... e5e56fe234

Then use Revouninstaller to remove it.........let Revo run all the way through including Advanced Scan

Select all and Delete

Reboot system

Let me know how you get on.

After you have done all that, run a Malwarebytes scan.

Many thanks.

I installed the uninstaller (that I have used in the past). uTorrent was shown so I have successfully uninstalled it all now. Whilst I was doing that, another security warning appeared for PUA:Win32/Vigua.A Low threat. I have the option of removing, quarantining or blocking that. I've no idea what it is.

I have CC Cleaner. Will that show up malware?

I've now chosen remove on the Windows security page and it seems to have corrected it. I've done a CC Cleaner scan and it's removed 9202 trackers, but not sure if it does check for malware. Otheriwse, is there a recommended malware app that I can install?

Hi Wicksey,

Third time lucky ..................got Blacklisted IP this afternoon (was on walkabout ) so unable to Post...............

Malwarebytes free..................

https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download

Click on white space in Scanner box
Advanced scanners --> Configure scan --> tick Scan for rootkits --> select disk........ probably C: in your case -->

This will take some time............make coffee ........relax

When finished Scan............ Quit Malwarebytes also CCleaner.............. inTask Scheduler Disable CCleaner............ you don't need these to on in day to day running,

It says I have the 'premium trial' version but I'm sure I downloaded the free version. Is that right? Anyway, I've followed your instructions Enrique and it's now scanning.

Also, it is a good idea to also have the Malwarebyte extension installed onto Chrome?

Hi Wicksey,

"'premium trial' ............it's Malwarebytes being pushy.............

hit the cog wheel .......... then Account and Deactivate Trial

No to extension ............... when you have finished Scan right click on Icon and "Quite Malwarebytes"

Wow! That scan is taking some time.
You must have a lot of stuff on the drive for it to take that long.

Hi,

"1hr37m into scan " ...............running Scan for Root kits............ I should have added best to run over night.

It's not a procedure you would normally run, a default Scan is sufficient would finish in less than 2 mins on a reasonably fast system.

I have reasonably fast hardware and a Malwarebytes scan including root kits selected for me has never taken more than 7 minutes.

I understand the speed of hardware can be an issue but a scan in excess of 90 minutes seems excessive.

I won't be doing the full scan again probably .... now over 11 hours and still looks like it has a long way to go. Thankfully I have a PC I can use as the laptop will not funtion with the scan running. Glad to hear that the usual default scan only take a few minutes!

It is showing one item 'detected'. What happens to that? Must say I'm rather fed up with it now!

How do I know what it is? It is still scanning and on the right under detections it says 1. There are no reports as I guess it will not show up until the scan has finished?
