Good quality Meat !!

Postby Monterey » Fri Nov 28, 2008 3:12 pm

Hi All,

We are so fed up with the rubbish lamb and bacon you get out here. Does anyone know of anyone who supplies good proper New Zealand legs of lamb (not the scrawny underfed ones you get in the supermarkets !). Also, can you get proper back bacon (smoked preferably) that doesn't shrivel to the size of a postage stamp ! We live in velez/malaga.

Thanks in advance and looking forward to Xmas.

If you fry the jamon, its as nice as any smoked bacon, our local bar serves cooked jamon with fried quail egg on bread, as a tapa its lovely........
The lamb, i would ask the butcher about it, rather than buying in the supermarket, but I still prefer British or new zealand any time :)

Try the English butcher in Torre del Mar.

He does superb meat, cut how you want it. Thick double (Barnsley) Lamb chops for the same price or less than those horrible bony, thin Spanish ones. He also does good smoked bacon and at this time of year he does a huge trade in gammons, legs of pork - whatever you want. Oh yes, and home made steak and kidney pies to die for.

We find the Danish bacon sold in Eroski and Supersol in foil packs to swell up if anything - the smoked "Ahumado" is particularly good, although I would love to know where the Cafe Eden in Torre del Mar and Bar Antonio above the health centre in Benamargosa buy their bacon - thick, juicy and tasty, and the latter does a delicious bacon and tomato roll with a café con leche in the mornings for just over 2€!
Being pensioners, Welsh/New Zealand/ decent lamb is like a Picasso to us - something to drool over but out of reach!

We always use a local butcher for our meat, they only sell chicken, pork or beef though. For some reason they never have lamb. I did ask about lambs kidneys and was quoted a silly price, decided to go without.
The meat from the butchers is so much better than the meat from the supermarkets and they cut the meat how we want it too. They even add onion, parsley and garlic to the mince if we want at no extra cost. (they mince the meat in front of us) We have to give advance notice though if we want a joint of pork with the skin on

if you see a 'freskisol' van running around the brit bars in your area ask the driver, they will sell you a 5 lb pack of good bacon for around 12 euros, good for english sliced bread around 1.30 too
they carry it as stock in back of van

prices may vary a bit but as the drivers are on commision they dont mind selling to the man in the street or in my case the man in the pub

you could alsoo ask any friendly bar owners to get you some, eurofoods do a 1 kilo pack of proper bacon for around 6 euros(has to be pre ordered off of rep)

mind you i dont mind that american tulip crap occasionally that u get in supermarkets

the 3 brit butchers in fuengirola also supply nz lamb in case your out on a day trip

Would you be able to give me directions to the english butcher in Torre Del Mar, I have been recommended him before but have not been able to find him. The only place i really know in Torre Del Mar is the police station. So if you could direct me from there.

Deb: go to http://maps.google.es/ and copy and paste the address in that Cid gave you.
The shop is actually in the part of the road to the north of the road that runs across it.
I suggest you come in to Torre from the motorway roundabout end, passing El Ingenio on your left, then at the junction at the end of that dual carriageway, turn right, stay in the left lane until past the school (high blue/white speed ramp in road, as all schools now), then park in the car park on your left, before you reach the fork in the road. Walk southeast, pass Carolina's vets and keeping this behind you, cross over, then after maybe 50 metres look for his road on the left and right - butcher's shop is on the branch to the left. Remember he will only be open in the mornings, like butchers of old when we had them in the UK!

Coming from Torrox, go into the centre of Torre and turn left at the big church in the centre. Carry on all the way up this road, across a number of crossings - eventually you reach a dead end. Roberto's is on the right hand side just as you enter the dead end section.

He is only open until about 2pm.

Ahem!! Sid - if you are coming from the east (Torrox) and turn left, you end up in the sea - I think you mean right?
The turning is opposite the top end of the wide pedestrianised steet running down to the front.

I haven't noticed a missing pool shop - hope it isn't the one I use to get my stuff!
The road you want for the butcher is, as Sid says, up the street just past the church - it is C/San Martin - opposite the top of Paseo de Larios (the wide pedestrianised thoroughfare that runs down to the front with wide flower beds in the middle and a statue of a dog cocking its leg) which crosses C/Dr Fleming, then C/de la Acequia, becoming C/Dr Ros Alferez somewhere on the way!
Deb: if you get to the church, you can always ask! :D

I didn´t follow my own advise and bought some entrecot steak at Eroski today  It was dreadful :( I cooked mushrooms and onions and added the steak, with freshly ground pepper on it. I cooked it so it was medium rare, it had not one bit of flavour- might was well have put the money inthe bin  JUst as well there were onions to give the steak some flavour. Shame I bought a pack with 2 pieces in it..... anyone want a piece of steak that tastes of nowt? :x If it were a UK supermarket I´d take it back and ask for a steak that actually tastes of meat. :(

Does anyone know the whereabouts of the butcher who used to work from within Lidl in Benalmadena (the store near Torremolinos on the coast road)? We used to buy our Xmas meat from here until the store was refurbished = have asked in the store but they can't tell me if it's relocated. It was the best ever and the butcher would cook the roast beef for us to our specification. Have had some decent stuff from Supersol near the police station, but it's hit and miss. The English butcher in Torre is really expensive and all 3 families that bought from there two years ago thought it was ok, but not good value for money.

Surely you didn't expect him to be cheap - if you want cheap meat buy from the supermarket.

Good quality meat from a good source is never cheap - the trouble with Spanish meat, particularly beef is that it is killed at 12 months old and never hung properly - that's why it is never tastes too good. A butcher in England would refuse to sell it. The same goes for Spanish lamb - it's killed too young. Pork is another matter - Spanish pork is usually pretty good.

The beef that he sells is older and hung properly and the lambs are nearly 12 months old - that is bound to make it expensive.

El Cid you are 100% correct meat as with cheese has to be matured and you only get what you pay for.

We don't mind splashing out a bit more for Xmas and like good quality - especially beef (I am Scottish for goodness sake!). We have all agreed Robertos is a traditional British butcher and I have to say I enjoyed the good old fashioned service and friendly, knowlegable staff but from the 3 families that bought their beef, turkey etc from there 2 years ago, we were all broke and said we wouldn't do this again! Yes, I know, it could be our cooking - haven't got Delia out of the cupboard since :(

Yes, I know what you mean about Xmas. Last year I wanted a couple of centre fillets for Beef Wellington for 12 people. He charged me 24€/kilo for the best bit of the fillet and it was brilliant. Actually I doubt that you could better that price anywhere else.

Incidentally Robert used to be a successful chef so he does know a bit about meat apart from just butchering it. He's getting in some really good Dutch veal fillets for me this week for an Italian dinner party.

And no - he's not a relative/mate of mine! :D
