Beware the First of May, shoppers!

Postby peteroldracer » Wed Apr 28, 2010 4:51 pm

Just in case some haven't twigged, this Saturday is the First of May, Labour Day in Andalucia. Unlike the UK, this is a public holiday on the day (unless it is a sunday), not the first monday in May, so most shops and supermarkets will be closed. According to their website, Carrefour are open in Rincon, Torremolinos and Estepona, but Mercadona appear to be closed all over the province.
As the shops will be shut for a whole two days (counting the sunday) this will cause enormous queues and general panic buying on Friday, to avoid starvation and dehydration of the populace!

I think the supermarkets are not allowed to shut 2 days running, so they may be open either on saturday, or on sunday

With respect(?) Julian.....that comment makes no sense at all! (Since you are the one suggesting the supermarkets will NOT be closed for 2 days)

go on Jool, say it..testicles..live life on the edge!! :)

Los supermercados no pueden cerrar dos días seguidos. En caso de que caiga un día festivo en lunes, el supermercado debe permanecer abierto el domingo o el lunes hasta por lo menos las 13:00

Hi,
You're on form this evening Jool, had a good day :?:

Sounds better in English Julian.................

"The supermarkets cannot close two followed(consecutive) days. In case it(he,she) falls(falls due) a bank holiday in Monday, the supermarket must remain opened on Sunday or Monday up to(even) at least them 13:00"

Now who is confused

And anyway who in the Western world would suffer "starvation and dehydration" if the supermarkets did close for two days :?:
All my best learning experiences start with a problem I need to solve.

the only reason I said
"I think the supermarkets are not allowed to shut 2 days running, so they may be open either on saturday, or on sunday"
is because some time ago I remember asking at my local supermarket if they would be shut all weekend as there was a bank holiday coming up, and I was surprised when the girl replied that the supermarkets were not alowed to be shut two consecutive days..and I´ve noticed since that they never are !!

Why do you ridicule People so much?
Wouldn't it be logical that those that normally do their weekly shopping on a Saturday,to do their shopping on a Friday evening if they are expecting the shops to be shut on the first.
I certainly will.
Where does panic buying come into it?

There is obviously a new day on the Spanish calendar, only applicable to certain A.com members. I am not sure if it is "missing the point" day, "failure to see humour or irony" day, or simply "thickies" day.
I post something intending to be helpful, having checked the websites of two of the major supermarket chains as to what they are going to do this weekend, and some idiot pops up with the most profound truth contradicting me, based upon a conversation with a shopgirl....
Another blithering idiot then misses the point completely that I made a very tongue-in-cheek comment about the actions of the indigenous population, or at least how it appears.
I only ridicule people who are qualified - sadly there are too many.

What I want to know is why do people always seem to have a disproportionate of amount loo rolls and loaves of bread in their trollies when the shops are closed for a day? Especially at Christmas. I know they often have guests, but is their cooking that bad they live on dry bread and need 24 loo roll? (If you don't believe me, next time look at what the person in front of you gets out of their trolley!!!!!)Image

I didn't miss any point Peter
If you are too thick to see that I took exception to the way you put down the Spanish tongue-in-cheek or not,..... Maybe If it had been an isolated case, I could have seen the funny side but with you sadly it isn't.
Why can't you make your point without being offensive ?

in future Peter if you start a topic please clearly state that you do not want any opinions that differ from your own, or maybe you should start you own forum where you do not allow other members to voice their opinions and experiences so that you do not have to resort to being rude when you can´t cope with other people having their own opinions.

"Los supermercados no pueden cerrar dos días seguidos. En caso de que caiga un día festivo en lunes, el supermercado debe permanecer abierto el domingo o el lunes hasta por lo menos las 13:00"
this did not come from a "shopgirl"...........if you google it you´ll find it.

it is just remotely possible that you may not be 100% correct (god forbid) it is also very possible that I am not correct, that´s why I put "I think", as I am not sure, but it is what I have been told , and what I have read,
let´s see if you are right in saying ...."As the shops will be shut for a whole two days (counting the sunday) this will cause enormous queues and general panic buying on Friday, to avoid starvation and dehydration of the populace".....we´ll know by monday
