CPU Temperature

Postby Campo Steve » Sat Aug 28, 2010 2:37 pm

What is the ideal temperature for the CPU?

I was recommended to install Speccy as that will give me the CPU temp easily and it shouldn't be above 50 degrees. Speccy tells me mine is about 61 degrees.

But
:
I have read on various web sites that different programmes can give different readings as they read from different parts of the CPU. Some programmes, apparently, give two readings for the CPU.

My laptop does get quite hot in places, which is why I wanted to see what the temp is. I have it sitting on a laptop cooler to try to keep it cooler. The manual says it should always be used on a hard surface to keep the vents clear (makes sense) but it also says it should never be used on your lap "because it gets hot"!

So, what is the ideal/max temperature and what is the best programme to get a reading that will relate to that ideal/max temp?
I've got an inferiority complex, but it's not a very good one!

I think it depends on the make and model of the CPU. Current models of virtually every computer will switch themselves off before the CPU temperature becomes critical:

Hi Campo Steve,
As Beach points out it will depend on the CPU, it will cut out if it gets too hot.
One indicator(that it's getting too hot) might be the fact that the cooling fan is running at full speed.
Always use laptop on a hard surface so the maximum air can get in and out.
Your laptop will have the operating specs in the back of the user manual....the bit no one reads.
All my best learning experiences start with a problem I need to solve.

No idea which is the best programme, but I use Everest, I expect they all do a similar job though.
