Malaga Cathedral Open Air Museum and Gardens

by Chris Chaplow

This is not really a museum as such but in the Malaga Cathedral Gardens there is  a small collections of rusting iron sculptures by Jorge Rando called Museo al Aire libre de la Catedral de Málaga (Malaga Cathedral Open Air Museum)

The visitor should stroll through the gardens before the visit to see the Malaga Cathedral interior.

An unmarked door here is the secret entrance route for guided tours to the cathedral rooftop. Tickets are purchased at the Cathedral ticket office.

The visitor can also the statue to Malaga's patron "Santa Maria de la Victoria" marking the 500th anniversary of her entrance to the city in 1487. There is also a marble bust to novelist and poet Arturo Reyes.(1864 -1913).

On the external wall of the cathedral is a bronze plaque, perhaps of more interest to American than British visitors. It presented by the National Society Sons of the American Revolution in May 1957 and reads

"We hearby wish to express our sincere and deep apreciation for the generocity of the pepole of Malaga, the most reverend Miguel Murguiro, Bishop of Malaga and chapter of this holy church who in the year 1780 contributed 400,000 reales to his Majesty King Carlos III for aid to the American Colonies in their war with Great Britain and for support of General Bernardo de Galvez Govornor of Louisana. As a result of their generosity they abandoned the construction of the second bell tower for this cathedral which we will never forget your offering to our country."

Leaving the gardens through the archway to visit the cathedral's interior, don't miss a small ornamental garden adjacent to Calle del Cistner. The low well kept hedges and water features are often photographed by visitors. You might also notice as stone base and iron cross. There is little clue to its origin. It was or is a memorial to those nationalists from Malaga  who died during the civil war.  The four brass plaques with the names have been removed since the Spain's transition to democracy.

Next door to the gardens is the traditional stylish Cafe 'El Jardin' and is worth a vist. There are also public conveniences in the gardens.
