Los Marines is located in the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche, 6.6 km west of Aracena, towards Portugal. It has around 350 inhabitants.
With a population of 5,000 this is one of the larger towns in the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park. Cortegana's castle dominates the skyline from miles around and is particularly dramatic with the sunset behind it.
Fuenteheridos is a pretty village just off the main N-433. A tiny village of some 700 people, Fuenteheridos can get overrun with visitors, mainly from Seville, at weekends and holidays. With about six bars around the paseo, there's a great choice of places to stop and sample some of the Sierra's setas (wild mushrooms) in autumn.
Zufre is described as 'a white village hidden amongst the clouds and nature' and is just an hour's drive north of Seville, in the middle of the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche natural park in the province of Huelva. Its population is 1.000. Due to its geographical situation and altitude at 450m, the colder winter months see an average temperature of 10ºC and in summer the average is 25ºC.
Sierra de Aracena is the large comarca (area) in the north of Huelva Province. It covers part of the Sierra Morena mountain range that spans accross most of northern Andalucia.
Cumbres Mayores is located at the northern most edge of Andalucía, only 10km from the neighbouring comunidad autónoma (autonomous community) of Extremadura. Its border position can be seen in the change in land use - the farming of cereals and cattle - that is more characteristic of Extremadura than Andalucía.
Santa Ana la Real, situated within the Sierra de Aracena, is in one of the wettest areas in the whole of Spain, with an average annual rainfall of 1100 mm.The village is situated in a small valley between Cerro Castillejo and las Cumbres de la Serrachuela mountains. It has around 500 inhabitants.
Although at first Jabugo is one of the less picturesque villages in the Sierra de Aracena, with abattoirs and factories littering its outskirts to feed the local jamon iberico industry, the old centre is as attractive as any Aracena town.
Higuera de la Sierra is a village in the north-east of Huelva province within the Parque Natural de la Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche. It has a famous Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos (Three Kings Procession), when all the inhabitants play out Bible scenes, the only one of its kind in Spain, and also one of the oldest at nearly 100 years old.The village has approximately 1400 inhabitants.
Tucked away on the southwestern edge of the park is Almonaster, one of the most quaint villages of the Sierra. It has a magnificent hilltop mosque dating from the 10th century situated in amongst the ruins of a castle.
One of the prettiest villages in the Sierra, Alájar is overlooked by the towering Peña de Arias Montano, a dramatic rocky outcrop with a church and belfry. From the Peña is a stunning view of Alájar, its fields of olive trees and the gently undulating plain south of the Sierra.
Famous for the sweet chestnut trees that surround it and give it its name, this village has remained largely unchanged for centuries. The houses are amazingly well preserved - the village was founded in 1554, and many date from the 16th century - with exquisite structural and decorative detail.
Aroche is located at the far western edge of the Sierra close to the Portuguese border. One of the least visited places in the Sierra, it is nevertheless worth exploring for its rich history and great location. Aroche is a hilltop village, its whitewashed houses flanking the sides of a restored medieval castle.
This is the "last town" before the border (la frontera) with Portugal, which is only a few kilometres to the west. It lies on the N-433 road, which runs through the centre of the town.
This small village is situated within the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche, 12km east of Aracena, surrounded by cork oak woods. It is perfectly positioned to enjoy views of the Sierra and especially the reservoir of Aracena. The population is around 300.
