Situated at Km 474 of the N-340 highway is Route 66, a popular American bar. Its name draws a link between the famous dusty American road and Spain´s iconic coastal route, and sits well amongst the Tabernas Desert, a filming location for many Hollywood Westerns.
The wonderful 18th century two-storey building, which now houses the Sierra Alhamilla Balneario (Spa), was restored from ruins in 1984 by Isidro Perez. Originally built on Roman and Arabic ruins, it took 8 years of painstaking work to bring it back to its original historic beauty and retaining its authentic medieval atmosphere.
Like the nearby Desierto de Tabernas Natural Area, this is a dramatically eroded lunar landscape of semi-arid desert covering 2,375ha, designated a protected area in 1989. It is also Spain's most important karst landscape composed of gypsum (yeso), and one of the best examples of its kind in the world.
In the 1960s and 1970s more than 100 films were partially shot at these two film sets in the bleak Almeria desert landscape of Tabernas, including Westerns such as A Fistful of Dollars, The Magnificent Seven, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly; also Lawrence of Arabia and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
Much of the interior of Almeria province is semi-arid steppe. It is a parched, lunar landscape of low, mostly barren mountains and dried-up river beds, like a scene from the North American Wild West and it´s no surprise that this is where many spaghetti westerns were shot. You can visit Mini Hollywood, near Tabernas.
