Iglesia de la Magdalena

Iglesia de la Magdalena

Beneath its modest appearance, the Church of La Magdalena holds great historical significance, as it stands in the neighborhood that once housed the Mozarabic community during Islamic rule, making it one of the most historically important sites in Guadix.

Construction began in the mid-16th century and follows the traditional Mudejar style, featuring wooden ceilings, a bell tower typical of Guadix, and an exterior layout that reflects the neighborhood’s character and simplicity.

The portal, dated 1621, belongs to the early Baroque period. It displays the coat of arms of Bishop Tosantos and an image of Saint Mary Magdalene, reflecting both religious devotion and ecclesiastical prestige.

Recently restored, the church has been converted to house the Diocesan Archive of Guadix and to safeguard some of the town’s most valuable religious artifacts, ensuring their preservation for future generations.

It is located on Calle Real de la Magdalena, one of the oldest and most charming areas of the city.
