Palacio de Villalegre
One of the town’s most emblematic buildings, it was constructed by the Fernández de Córdoba family on the site of an earlier Muslim building that had been owned by Hernán Valle, El Zagal’s secretary, who was expelled to the Santa Ana suburb after the second Moorish revolt in 1490. Several generations of the Córdoba family enjoyed the palace before it passed into the hands of the Marquis of Villalegre, José Manrique de Arana, who was then warden of the Mangaula Fortress in Badajoz, in 1685. In 1779, the palace was rented by the Count of Alcudia, Pedro Cueto, and was later used as barracks for the Civil Guard, as a tenement dwelling and finally as barracks for the Local Police. It is currently being considered for conversion into a professional music conservatory. It is located on Calle Santa María del Buen Aire.
