Carmen Sevilla

The well-known Spanish actress and singer, Carmen Sevilla was born Carmen García Galisteo in Seville on the 16th October 1930. From an early age she was involved in the world of theatre and dance, appearing as a ballerina aged 12 in the theatrical spectacle, "Spanish Rhapsody", along with Paquita Rico and Ana Esmeralda.

Sierra Maria-Los Velez Natural Park

Designated a natural park in 1987, the Sierra María-Los Vélez occupies the eastern end of the Cordillera Subbética in the north of Almeria province. It covers 22,670ha, a landscape of impressive contrasts, with its arid, moon-like plains overlooked by the Sierra's rocky summits, which are white with snow in winter, and the dry, barren south-facing slopes compared to its densely wooded north-facing ones.

El Calvario Park

El Calvario is a town park that has made use of the land around the old hermatige chapel Ermita del Calvario. On this land it was traditional to celebrate the day of the "tostón", a tradition fiesta to roast the new crop of chestnuts from the forest and make a small pilgrimage to the ermita.

Almuñecar Beaches

The Costa Tropical boasts some magnificent beaches and the town of Almuñécar is no exception, here is the list going from west to east. Playa del Cotobro, a lovely beach to the west of Almuñécar town with dark sand and pebbles. The beach is backed by a palm tree-lined paseo maritimo with plenty of shops and cafes and a large hotel with stunning sea views.

Cámaron de la Isla

Supposedly the greatest flamenco singer ever, Camarón de la Isla was considered to be the gypsy god of flamenco and his effigy is respected in a somewhat religious manner. This legendary great of flamenco history had the kind of image that the younger generation could associate with, a young gypsy rebel who was the first flamenco of rock star status.

Huércal Overa - History

According to historian Menendez Pidal, Huércal-Overa takes its name from the repopulation of two different villages at the end of the fifteenth century. The former presence of Phoenicians and Greeks in search of minerals in the area, as well as Carthaginians and Romans, has been attested to by historians. On the summit of Cabezo de la Jara is the cave of La Cueva de los Escipiones, named after a Roman General who is thought to have visited the spot with his army.

Hostals and Hostels in San Pedro

San Pedro offers a variety of hostals (Spanish Guesthouses) both in the centre of town and on the outskirts and all come at a reasonable price. These are perfect for those who do not want to spend a lot of money on a hotel or for those who are just passing through the area. They all provide comfortable and clean accommodation at a cheaper price.

El Faro

Playa el Faro is situated just to the west of Marbella Port and enclised by the breakwater. It is a very small stretch of beach only 200m X 30m and is very sheltered. This is a very busy beach because of it´s convenient location in the centre of Marbella, close to a number of hotels and not far from the Old Town.

Malaga Metro

The Málaga Metro is a light railway network with two lines which opened in July 2014. They cover the areas to the west and south-west of the city. The lines curently terminate at the main line train station and the extention to bring the metro right into the city centre is under constructioni.

Melchor de Marchena

Melchor Jiménez Torres arrived into the world in 1907, and by a very young age it was obvious that flamenco was part of his body. He eventually received the nickname, Melchor de Marchena, and has been noted as just about the best accompanist in flamenco history.

Roman roads in Andalucia

Via Herculea or Via Exterior was an important Roman road into Hispania, reaching as far as Gades (Cadiz). This 1,500 km-road from Narbonne in Gaul to Cadiz was renamed Via Augusta after the emperor, who ordered it to be renovated between 8 BC and 2 BC. Many Roman roads in Andalucia are today referred to as Via Augusta. This is a misnomer, although other roads that Augustus renovated may have been referred to locally as Via Augusta. The confusion arises because the Romans only named principal routes.

Roman Baths of Casares

In the valley below Casares are the Roman Sulphur baths of Hedionda. The high sulphur content is due to a sulphur spring which flows from a limestone outcrop above the valley. It attracted the attention of the Romans 2000 years ago.

Blas Infante

Blas Infante is known as the "father of Andalucia"having fought for what is today the "Estatuto de Autonomia de Andalucia" (Self-governing statute for Andalucia). Blas Infante Pérez de Vargas was born at 11am 5th July 1885 in the house at 55 Calle Carrera in village of Casares (Malaga).

Cúllar - Venta Quemada

Venta Quemada is a small village in the municipal district of Cúllar on the plateau of Chirivel, one of the ‘High Plains’ (Atliplano) of the province of Granada. The village sits within the comarca of Baza, located south of the A-92N motorway off junction km 75 (coming from Guadix, or km 369 coming from Seville). It has a population of about 125. The village shares its name with a very popular venta (roadside inn) that specialises in barbeque grill.
