Ronda - Fascinating Fact 3 - Cave art

Cueva de la Pileta is 15km south of Ronda, and is well worth seeing unless you suffer from claustrophobia or hate bats. These prehistoric cave paintings of fish, goats, horses and bulls, as well as abstract symbols, in charcoal, red and yellow, date from the late Palaeolithic period (3rd century BC).

Ronda - Fascinating Fact 1 - A load of Bulls

No one can come to the hilltop town of Ronda, Andalucia's most-visited pueblo blanco, without being aware of its significance in the bullfighting world. From Pedro Romero, who revolutionised bullfighting in the 18th century by doing it on foot (as opposed to horseback) here, to corrida fans Orson Welles and Ernest Hemingway (See FACT II), who both loved the town and visited frequently, to famed matador Antonio Ordoez, whose finca is nearby (his old friend Hemingway's ashes were scattered there). Ordoez started the Feria Goyesca, a colourful tableau of Goya-period costumes (the painter often portrayed bullfighters), based on his paintings. The spectacular pageant celebrates the painter (Goya), the bullfighter (Romero) and the art (bullfighting).

Over the past ten years or so, out-of-town shopping centres ( centros comerciales, or CCs), whether supermarkets or fashion outlets, have become increasingly prevalent in Andalucia, located on the edge of towsn and cities or in their suburbs.

Hotels in Cádiz

The city of Cadiz is an amazing place to explore on foot. Situated at the end of a peninsula, Cadiz is surprisingly compact and easy to navigate, even for the most timid of visitors. Its cathedral, its ancient walls, its old fortifications, and its narrow streets all work to invite the visitor into the city's heart and engulf them in the soul of the place.

Festivals in Benarraba

Festivals in Bebarraba - Calle Pósito is turned into a medieval village and where a large proportion of the villagers dress for the occasion. The street is full on both sides with local products, mainly food stuffs, as well local bars take part in the theme. Visitor form other villages, Ronda, and the coast take the opportunity to buy last minute presents ahead of the 'reyes'.

Camping Genal

Camping Genal is located in deep in the Genal river valley between Jubrique and Algatocin on the MA-8305 road. A secluded area very quiet and great for kids to play safely outside. It is a superb location right beside the Genal river in a woodland location. Swimming is popular in the river in the summer months.

Cadiz Carnival - Fascinating Fact 3 - Dress up

Costumes at the Cadiz Carnaval are about more than doing clever things with face paint and papier mache; they are social levellers. Going back centuries, disfraces were essential in breaking down social barriers, helping classes to come together, providing freedom from repression. People could let loose, follow their instincts, dress up as duchesses or peasants, or fantastical creatures.

Jerez de la Frontera - Fascinating Fact 3

Fortified wines were first exported to England from Jerez as long ago as the 14th century; some British Catholics fled here in the 16th century and started up as wine-traders. Later, in the 17th century, others opened their own bodegas (Garvey, Duff-Gordon, Wisdom & Warter).
