History of Caminito del Rey

The original path was built between 1901 and 1905 by the Sociedad Hydroelectrica del Chorro (Chorro Hydroelectric Society). A pioneering project to take advantage of the 100m drop in the river Guadalhorce required the construction of a small dam.

Caminito del Rey - Future Plans

The original declared plan to construct a permanent visitors centre at each access was moved into 'Phase 2' works by the Diputación de Malaga as announced on 2nd Oct 2015 and again 4th April 2016. The visitors centre and car park that is strategically located mid way between the walk's start and finish points on the return shuttle bus route.

Getting to El Caminito del Rey

The official starting point of the Camino de Rey access path is on the country road MA-444 (which branches off the MA-5403 6km east of Ardales) just south where it crosses over the Conde de Guadalhorce Dam by the Sillon del Rey (King's seat) a stone seat where King Alfonso XIII signed off the dam in 1926, It is near a popular roadside restaurant called "El Kiosko".

The Carmelite Convent, Ronda

Walk up the hill from the bullring, and you will soon find yourself at the foot of a wide flight of stone steps leading to the imposing wooden doors of the Merced Carmelite Convent. The first Carmelites were male hermits, former pilgrims and crusaders who gathered together in 1155 AD at Mount Carmel in Palestine, close by the fountain of Elijah, and dedicated themselves to a life of austerity, poverty and prayer.
