Pulianas

Pulianas

Pulianas is comprised of two different areas: Pulianas and Pulianillas. These were originally two independent villages, united in 1945 through the connection of their respective main roads. On the Pulianas side, the road is Calle Aljibe, and in Pulianillas, it is called Avenida de Andalucía. Both areas are separated by the Arroyo Juncaril (Juncaril Stream). It has approximately 5,000 inhabitants

History

The origins of Pulianas date back to the Roman period. Archaeological remains indicate it was established as one of numerous agricultural villages near Granada. Historians believe the municipality’s name may have two origins: Arabic and Roman. According to Seco de Lucena (19th century Spanish writer, journalist, lawyer and politician), in Muslim times, it was named Bulyana. More>

Things to see

Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios (Church of Our Lady of the Remedies) originated from an old convent built in 1531, and over time, various secondary buildings, including an old mill, were added, forming the complex now called the Huerto de San Antón. On the exterior there are two crosses. The first cross, classified as Latin and of octagonal shape, is embedded in the facade of the church. The second cross stands on a square pillar with a base in a concave shape, continuing with the straight lines of a simple cross. The ornamentation on its crowning finials is possibly a more recent addition. Made of modern balustrade pieces it does not correspond to the origin of the cross's erection. Mass is celebrated in this church on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 19.30 hrs. Located on Calle Congreso.

Iglesia Parroquial de San José
The Iglesia Parroquial de San José (the parish church of Pulianas, San José) dates from the 18th century and hosts a magnificent altarpiece, as well as images of Virgen de los Dolores (Virgin of Sorrows), Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno (Our Father Jesus of Nazareth) and Virgen del Rosario (Virgin of the Rosary). Mass is celebrated on Monday mornings at 10.30 hrs and in the afternoons on Thursdays and Fridays at 19.30 hrs. Located on Calle Ancha.

Via Crucis
An important group of stone crosses form a Via Crucis (Stations of the Cross), which are performed in this town during Holy Week. A group of three crosses dating from the sixteenth century stand out, with the image of Jesus Christ carved in stone on the centre cross. Located on Camino Viejo.
