History

Cogollos is located on the northern edge of the Sierra Nevada Natural Park, in the mountainous area known to the Arabs as El Sened. However, the area's origins date back to the Late Roman Empire, a period from which numerous coins and jewels have been discovered. Some historians argue that this Roman settlement was built on an earlier one from the Argaric period, again due to its iron and copper deposits. Following the conquest of the town by the Catholic Monarchs, it was granted to the Marques de Villena and remained under his jurisdiction until the abolition of the lordships in the nineteenth century.
