Acequia del Cadí

Acequia del Cadí

The community-operated acequia (irrigation ditch) was built in the Almohad period to supply and irrigate the Campo del Príncipe area. It is situated at a higher elevation than the area served by the Acequia Gorda branch. Water from the Genil River is introduced into the irrigation ditch by the Presa Real (Royal Dam). In the past women would go to wash along the banks of the ditch as it passed through the town. The ditch is lined with cement walls and has a vaulted structure for most of its length, leaving the town almost one kilometre away from the Genil River, making washing tasks more difficult. Due to the high quality of the water flowing through this irrigation ditch, crops grown in this area are renowned. These include corn, alfalfa, tobacco, wheat, poplars, fodder, asparagus, potatoes, garlic, beans, fruit trees, and ornamental plants.
