Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario

Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario

The church was built in the mid-sixteenth century by the bricklayer Alonso Velázquez and the carpenter Domingo de Frechilla, with bricks provided by Pedro el Raguani. The temple was burnt down by the Moors and rebuilt between 1585 and 1588 by bricklayer Hernando de Azuaga and carpenter Cristobal de Azuaga. Materials from the uninhabited Undurón were used for its reconstruction. In the last quarter of the seventeenth century, further works were carried out and, in the second half of the eighteenth century, the current apse and extension to three naves were built. The tower is contemporary and was repaired after the 1884 earthquake. The church has a Latin cross plan inscribed in a rectangle with three naves, a transept and a main chapel. The transept is covered by a dome on pendentives, while the transept arms are covered by barrel vaults. The central nave is covered by a lowered barrel vault with lunettes and transverse arches. Two semicircular arches on either side of the central nave connect it to the side naves. On the epistle side, there is a square-shaped alcove with a dome decorated with geometric stucco shapes. To its left stands the tower, which is built entirely of brick and has a curvilinear slate spire on a hipped roof. There are windows with raised mouldings along the entire side of the façade. It is located on Calle Ancha.
