Municipal Museum of Antequera
Located in the historic Palacio de Nájera, right in the centre of Antequera, the Municipal Museum of Antequera (Museo Municipal de Antequera) offers a complete journey through the history from prehistoric times to the present day.
Its origins date back to 1908 with the creation of the Municipal Archaeological Museum. In 1966, it moved to the 18th-century Palacio de Nájera, officially reopening its doors in 1972. A major refurbishment between 2009 and 2011 expanded its exhibition space to more than 5,000 square metres, reinforcing its status as a cultural institution of reference in Andalusia.
The Municipal Museum of Antequera houses a wide variety of objects in 27 exhibition rooms, covering archaeology, fine arts, and ethnography:
- The Ephebus of Antequera: A 1st-century bronze sculpture representing a young man.
- Roman mausoleum of Acilia Plecusa: A mausoleum from the nearby Roman city of Singilia Barba, reconstructed inside the museum.
- Prehistoric and Chalcolithic artefacts: artefacts from the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods, including a Bronze Age sculpture of a hermaphroditic deity.
- Baroque works of art: pieces such as the San Francisco de Asís by Pedro de Mena and paintings by Antonio Mohedano.
- Religious treasures: collection of Marian jewellery and liturgical textiles from the 16th and 17th centuries.
- Contemporary Art: works by local artists, with rooms dedicated to Cristóbal Toral, José María Fernández, and Jesús Martínez Labrador.
Also noteworthy are the Room of the Virgin of Socorro and the Room of the Virgin of the Rosary. In the basement, there are two multipurpose rooms with objects of traditional and popular technology.
