Spend half a day in Gibraltar

Covering just 6.8 square kilometres, Gibraltar may be small in size, but it has plenty to offer visitors of all interests. From history and wildlife to the sea, nature and shopping, there is much to discover in this unique destination.

Whether you enjoy exploring on foot and delving into the past, or prefer to take to the water and admire the coastline, there are two itineraries to help you make the most of your visit. Each offers a different way to experience Gibraltar, giving you a good overview of its main attractions, the Rock and the surrounding sea before you leave. Read more>

Option 1: The Complete Rock Experience

This itinerary covers Gibraltar’s most important natural, historical and cultural attractions. You will leave having fully explored the Rock of Gibraltar, an insight into its complex history, greeted the monkeys, and even had time to stop to look at some shops ( if you can, after all that walking!)

Start your day at the foot of the Mediterranean Steps(8:15–9:45)

The steps begin at Jew´s Gate at one of the entrances of the Nature Reserve by the Pillars of Hercules. Get there early to complete the Mediterranean Steps before temperatures rise. The route offers exceptional views of the Mediterranean, the Strait and the surrounding cliffs, however, this route may not be for everyone as it can take up to 2 hours, is steep, strenuous and exposed at times.

If this does not suit you and climbing the Mediterranean Steps is not an option, we recommend starting at the Market´s Place bus station office where you can purchase your ticket and for 10 pound more, be driven up and down again in a mini-bus. This does not include being driven around from landmark to landmark- for this option book a private rock tour or mini- bus company.

O´Hara´s Battery and Skywalk (9:45–10:15)

O´Hara´s Battery is the highest peak of the Rock of Gibraltar, once you reach this, you have officially made it to the top and finished the Mediterranean Steps. Surrounding this area, you will find many other military elements. Just a 10 minute walk away is the Skywalk, a glass viewing platform offering panoramic views of Gibraltar and its astonishing views. A fun fact for Star Wars fans, Mark Hamill, the actor who played Luke Skylwalker, inaugurated the Skywalk with a lifesaber. Continue to nearby viewpoints for additional perspectives.

St Michael’s Cave (10:15–11:15)

A short walk away is St Michael’s Cave, one of Gibraltar’s most striking natural formations. The cave’s chambers, stalactites and stalagmites, lighting and light shows offer you one of the most unique experiences on the Rock. Besides the cave, you have a restaurant and a shop if you need some water or a snack.

If you are lucky, you will probably get to meet some Barbary Macaques who like to hang just outside, although be careful if you bought food, it will defenitely be snatched from you by the hungry monkeys.

Windsor Suspension Bridge and Apes Den- Barbary Macaques (11:15- 12:00)

Walk accross Windsor Suspension Bridge on your way to meet the macaques. The bridge also offers beautiful views and luckily, most of the walk is downhill. Once you reach Apes Den, you will meet the much-loved but bold Gibraltar monkeys. Watch them eat, play around with each other and look after their babies. Do not get too close, provoke them, touch them or feed them, as although they are calm, they are still wild animals. Read more>

Great Siege Tunnels or World War II tunnels (12:00–13:30)

Explore the military tunnels of the Rock. There are two sets of tunnels availble to explore. Only 5 minutes apart from each other although each deserve a fair amount of time. If you want a more interactive and detailed trip around the tunnels and are more interested in modern history, we recommend the World War II ones.

Moorish Castle and Descent back into town (13:30 - 14:15)

To finalise your adventure on the Rock, you can walk around the historic Moorish Castle and take in the last of the views before you begin your walk ( or drive on mini bus (if you chose this option) back into town. This walk will lead ou back to Main Street and the bus will drop you at Market´s Place by Casemates Square.
