Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Anunciacion
Construction of the church began in 1543 under the direction of Nuño Cañizares, making use of the site of the mosque that had stood in the town during the Muslim period. The church is in the Mudejar style and has an interesting coffered ceiling. The façade features a semicircular arch and a sundial, while the two-storey tower is capped by a hipped bell tower. The main nave contains an octagonal framework, widely regarded as the finest example of its kind in Guadix and a masterpiece of Granada’s Mudejar carpentry. It features elegant interlacings in a Renaissance-style polychrome design, which end in a cluster of muqarnas. The main altarpiece is in the Baroque style of the 18^(th) century and houses images of the Virgen de la Inmaculada Concepción, Niño de la Bola, San Marcos, San José and El Crucificado, a work by Alonso Mena. The Renaissance baptismal font is one of the few remaining in the Diocese of Guadix. Its base is carved from freestone, which can support great weight. The pedestal is decorated with demons at the bottom and angels at the top, symbolising the transition from sin to divine salvation. It is located on Calle de la Iglesia.
