Castillo

Castillo

The castle comprises the remains of a large, almost square tower measuring approximately 12 metres on each side. It was built with 1.25-metre-thick rammed earth walls. It is approximately 8.50 metres high and has a masonry slope on the exterior of the southwest side, perhaps created to reinforce it. Access to the interior is via a 1.20-metre-wide brick semicircular arch, which leads to a square room that is now roofless. This large room is surrounded by three smaller rooms with log and wooden plank ceilings. All of the interior divisions within the tower are made of masonry walls. The tower was once part of a large fortified enclosure which possibly occupied the entire block in which it is located; the surrounding streets are named after the Alcazaba, and the citadel itself was also part of the enclosure. The latter building was constructed later using structures from the original military enclosure. Some older walls, possibly belonging to the original fortress, can be seen in the adjoining buildings, especially on the north-west side of the tower. The castle is listed as a Site of Cultural Interest
