HISTORY
The history of the village of Ferreira begins in prehistoric times with the El Cardal mining
fortress (Ramella Fortress), where iron ore slag and ceramics from the Argaric and Late Iberian
cultures were found. Around 1490, Ferreira became part of the Marquisate of Zenete under the
Crown of Castile, with Don Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar y Mendoza as the first marquis. In 1494, the
village hosted Hieronymus Münzer, a doctor from Nuremberg who documented its customs,
giving his name to the Münzer Route. Following Morisco uprisings and their subsequent
expulsion, the area was repopulated by settlers, largely from Galicia.
