Castillo de Muros

Castillo de Muros

During the Nasrid period, Fonelas played a key role in surveillance and defence against Christian attacks via the Guadiana Menor and Fardes rivers towards Guadix. For this reason, an extensive defensive network was established. Fonelas itself consisted of a castle and four watchtowers: the Guajar Tower, the Las Palomas Tower, the Pozico Tower and the Cerro del Gallo Tower. The castle is located on a plateau that is sheer on all sides except the north-facing side, where access is gained. The castle's main remaining structure is a truncated pyramid-shaped tower with a slopeon three of its sides and a rectangular floor plan measuring approximately 6.70 x 4.70 metres. It is located north of the town.
