Bullring and Santa Margarita gardens - Linares
The initiative of Luis María Granados to provide the city with the bullfighting arena it deserved finally bore fruit between 1866 and 1867. The emblematic arena, with a capacity for 9,392 people, was consolidated in 1949 with its whitewashed facade and the albero sand which is preserved to this day. The arena with the largest ring in Spain was drastically reduced in the 1970s by the refusal of the right-hander Manuel Guerra Guerrita to carry out any task in the arena of the Linares square. The Santa Margarita bullring is known, among other things, because the Cordovan bullfighter, Manolete, died there on the afternoon of August 28, 1947. Since then, locals and outsiders have remembered that afternoon through a plaque alluding to the event that can be found in the facade of the square. The memory of Manolete remains intact inside the arena, thanks to a small chapel dedicated to his figure. The Linares bullring has always been a must for lovers of international bullfighting. Great writers and intellectuals of recognised prestige, such as Ernest Hemingway, have enjoyed glorious bullfighting afternoons in this bullring. On 28 August every year, people place flowers on the Manolete statue in Linares. Manolete's death is also remembered in the ring by putting a bunch of roses in the place where he fell.Location
