Ermita Cristo del Zapato

Situated on the top of Monte Chinchirilla in Pinos del Valle, the chapel is one of the most famous landmarks. This small temple is dedicated to the Santo Cristo del Zapato. It holds great cultural and symbolic importance for the town and all who visit. According to legend, a shepherd found a painting on the mountain, where the hermitage stands today, at the end of the eighteenth century. The painting depicted the Santo Cristo del Zapato alongside San Roque and San Sebastián. The man decided to share his find with the town’s residents and took the painting to the church in Barrio Alto, where it was welcomed with great affection and devotion. However, much to everyone's surprise, the painting had mysteriously reappeared on the hill the next morning. This happened up to three times, leading the people of Pinos to believe that the painting belonged on the mountain. They therefore built the chapel that can be visited today. Built in the mid-nineteenth century by the Bonel and Orbe families, it was enlarged in 1920 and rebuilt in 2009 after being struck by lightning. In any case, the Santo Cristo looks out over the entire Lecrín Valley from its summit, guiding and attracting visitors with an aura of mystery and charm.
