Sierra de Segura

Segura de la Sierra

It is evident at first glance that Segura de la Sierra is part of the Ruta del Castillo (Castle Route) through the lands of Andalusian. Its urban centre, which was declared a Historical and Artistic Site, is crowned by an impressive castle of Muslim origin remodelled during the Christian era, which has the category of National Monument. Just behind the castle you can also see the so-called Torre del Agua, a watchtower-type tower similar to the Torre del Espolón that is also found in the municipality of Segura de la Sierra. It has about 1800 inhabitants.

Siles

Siles is another of the towns in the province of Jaén that is part of the Castle Route through Andalusia thanks to the Torre del Cubo, a tower of circular plan which is all that remains of a castle of Muslim origin renovated in Christian times, and which has the category of Historical Monument. Also in the same category are the remains of a wall, another tower and the Torre de Magdalena that can be seen among the hamlets of its picturesque town centre of stepped streets. It has about 2200 inhabitants.

Hornos

Despite some recent construction around the village, the view of Hornos del Segura from afar remains spectacular. History - Puente de Génave

The town has very different origins and history than the rest of the province. The decision was made to build a road that linked Jaén with Albacete and as part of it, a bridge, the “new bridge”, was completed in 1889. This signified the birth of the town and it was accompanied by immense growth, such that in less than 50 years, it was already a municipality, thus becoming the only town in Jaén of the twentieth century.

History - Torres de Albánchez

History - Torres de Albánchez

The origin of Torres de Albánchez is in one of the numerous castle-fortresses that in Islamic times populated the Sierra de Segura de la Yedra, around which the villages scattered throughout its area gathered in times of danger. The lands that the town currently occupies belonged to the Iqlim of Saqura, initially dependent on the Cora of Yayyan (Jaén), and which since the eleventh century was an independent manor, although closely linked to the Cora of Tudmir (Murcia).

History - Santiago-Pontones

History - Santiago-Pontones

In the Cueva del Nacimiento in Fuente Segura (Pontones), one of the oldest human settlements in the province is documented. In 9250 BC a kinship community existed in this place. This first phase of settlement is superimposed on another in the Neolithic, which due to the ceramic material and lithic industry found, has been dated to the middle of the sixth millennium BC. A later phase belongs to the “Río Frío” shelter, which houses a collective tomb that has been dated between the end of the third millennium and second millennium BC.
