History of Polopos

Polopos dates back to the Andalusi era. Los Ceheles were two Tahas located in the eastern most area of the Granada Coast. The Tahá located further to the East was called the Tahá de Sahil, normally more depopulated than its companion in the West due to the continuous incursions of Turkish corsairs and Barbary Moors. Several rural cisterns and water wheels remain as timeless witnesses of this Arab period, symbols of an undoubtedly prosperous agriculture.

History

According to historical archives, the remains found in the Caves del Moro, de la Higuerilla, and de la Paloma indicate that the earliest settlements recognised in the area were megalithic.

Tomas el Nitri

Tomas el Nitri, considered one of the most important singers in the history of the cante flamenco, was born in Arcos de la Frontera some time around 1830 and died in 1890. There are as many myths as there are question marks surrounding el Nitri`s life, stories like the one of his demise after choking on his own blood.

Almuñécar History Museum

The building of the museum is found within the San Miguel Castle and dates back to the 18th century. The museum contains many of the archaeological findings that are common in the area and there are various models of Almuñécar showing how it would have looked at different periods in time during the Phoenician, Arabic and Roman eras.

Surfing

Although windsurfing tends to be better known on the Costa coastline – most famously in Tarifa - surfboarding is also enjoyed by many, particularly in the Autumn and Spring. On the Costa del Sol, the beaches around Estepona are particularly popular. However, it is the Costa de la Luz, between Tarifa and Cádiz, which has the best and most consistent good waves for surfing.
