Jimena de la Frontera - La Sauceda

La Sauceda is an abandoned village that dates back to Moorish times, located approximately 45 minutes’ drive north from Jimena de la Frontera on the C-3321 country road, 4km from the top of the Puerto de Galiz pass. Its isolated location deep in the Alcornocales Natural Park is actually within the municipal district of Cortes de la Frontera in Malaga province.

Peña de Castril Natural Monument

On the southern edge of the Sierra Castril Natural Park is this spectacular and exceptional rocky outcrop, the Peña de Castril, which looms large over the whitewashed houses of Castril village. Covering a mere 3.52ha, the rocky crag has the remains of a Medieval castle, which has had its towers and walls recently restored, and unsurpassed views over the countryside around Castril.

Malaga History - Cerro del Villar

The ancient settlement of Cerro del Villar was built by Phoenicians around the second quarter of the 8th century BCE on a small sand bar (island) in the wide estuary of the Guadalhorce River. The sand bar is now connected to the southern river bank and alluvial plane.

Hacienda del Mar (Formerly Kempinski Hotel Bahia)

The Kempinski Hotel Bahia is on the Mediterranean coast just east of Estepona and is surrounded by luxurious sub tropical gardens, complete with three lagoon type swimming pools, one of which is heated. Shopping in Seville

Los Reales de Sierra Bermeja Natural Area

Located in the southwest part of Malaga province, the Sierra Bermeja is a mountain range with an average height of 1,000m (its highest point being 1,450m), covering 1,236ha. It is an area that has undergone major volcanic activity; the rocks are rich in the olivine mineral. Rainwater has oxidised the iron and magnesium present in the rocks and the iron oxide has coloured the rock reddish-ginger, a hue that gives the sierra its name.

History of Beas de Granada

Beas de Granada’s origin dates back to the time of the Roman Empire. The oldest documentary references place it on the Roman road to Acci (modern-day Guadix). The name is believed to come from the Latin word Viax, meaning road.

Bullfighting

Bullfighting as we know it today, started in the village squares, and became formalised, with the building of the bullring in Ronda in the late 18th century. From that time, it began to follow a particular sequence of events: the entrance of the bull, the picador, the banderilleros, and finally the matador (bullfighter). Many of the picadors' horses were injured in the early days, so these heavy horses now wear protection.
