The present-day fishing village is a new settlement which developed over the last century or so. Like most towns on the Costa del Sol, it has seen rapid growth over the last few decades. Since the construction of Punta Almina estate in the 1980s, Sabinillas has become a popular place for foreign residents including those working in Gibraltar. Infrastructure improvements since then include improvements to Avenida Manilva, the construction of the seafront promenade and the underpass for the traffic on the coast road A-7.

There are several modern metro systems in Andalucia in the cities of Sevilla (opened in 2008), Malaga (opened in 2014) and Granada (opened in 2017). The Tramvia link from Chiclana to Puerto Real and Cadiz is completed bun not yet inaugurated. Seville Tram opened in 2011.

History of Pegalajar

History

The oldest evidenced occupation of the municipal area dates back to somewhere between 2000 and 2500 BC, and can be traced in the Cueva de Aro. Further prehistoric references can be found on the hill of the Torre de la Cabeza, where remains from the Copper, Bronze, Iberian, Roman and Medieval periods have been unearthed. The first written reference to a population in Pegalajar is found in the tenth-century work of oriental geographer Al Muqadasi.

San Pablo de Buceite

This lovely Andalusian village is located in Cádiz province in the area known as the “Campo de Gibraltar”. It is in the northwestern part of the Jimena de Libar municipality and claims to have more hours of sunshine than any other town in the province of Cádiz: 2,600 hours per year. Combine this with the ideal mix of subtropical and Mediterranean seaboard climate and you have a perfect place to visit or live.

An increasing number of people are either bringing their pets with them when they move to Spain, or else acquiring them here, reassured by the fact that, if they have to move for any reason, their pet doesn't have to be left behind.

Zagra

Zagra is a village in Granada province and an important archaeological site. Numerous remains from the Prehistoric, Neolithic and Roman era have been discovered here.

Estepa

Estepa is famous for two very different reasons. Chiefly it is renowned for the biscuits known as polvorones and mantecados which bakers make each Christmas and are traditionally eaten across this region of Andalucía. Its other claim to fame is a grisly mass suicide 2,200 years ago.

Dama de Noche Golf Course

This course was for the true golfing addicts and insomniacs: a 24-hour golfing paradise, the first in Europe. It took its name from the plant whose intoxicating nocturnal fragrance keeps some of the mosquitoes away. The lighting was system is designed to cast no shadows thus giving daylight quality and maximum visibility.

Centre of Contemporary Andalucian Art

The Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo is housed in the magnificent 15th-century Monasterio Santa Maria de las Cuevas. Known as La Cartuja, this is located in the district of the same name, north of Triana and across the river from the city centre – look for the iconic, cone-shaped towers.

Carratraca

Carratraca is a a white village tucked away in the Malaga mountains, which is home to one of the original Andalucian medicinal spas. If taking the waters and fresh, mountain air appeals to you, Carratraca could just be the place for you. A country drive through olive and almond groves, past the white village of Alora, its whitewashed houses spread over three hills below the impressive ramparts of Alora Castle.

Sierro

Sierro sits in a small corner of the Almerian mountain range. The traces of previous ages are captured in its well-preserved streets, which are so narrow that cars cannot pass. This means that the village is entirely pedestrianised, with breathable air free from pollution. It has around 380 inhabitants.

Cazorla

Cazorla is steeped in tradition. Its origins stretch back six centuries before Christ, although it was officially founded by the Romans, who named it Carcesa. Its splendour grew under Moorish and then Christian control.
