Sierras of Tejeda - El Robledal to La Maroma Walk

Sendero El Robledal to La Maroma. One of the most well known walks, this challenging, linear walk is 8.5km long, ascending 1,000m, and takes around four hours. It climbs the northern face of the park's highest peak, La Maroma. Take the C-335 and turn off down a forestry track at the Venta de La Alcaicería. Once at the Casa Forestal de Robledal Alto, take another track that goes south towards Los Barracones, a rural tourism centre. Park here, because cars aren't allowed any further, and start walking.

Los Barrios

Los Barrios is an interesting small town in the Campo de Gibraltar just inland from the N340 coast road between Algeciras and Sotogrande. The so-called 'Ruta del Toro' (Bull Route) begins here. The A381 leads from Los Barrios, which is now served by a new by-pass across the top to Jerez de la Frontera. Along this road there are many bull farms.

The Fall

The Fall was painted by Russian artist Vyacheslav Gunin ‘Sav45’. It was the winner of 'II Concurso Internacional de Murales de Estepona' ('II International Mural Competition of Estepona - 2020').

Estepona Mural - Dia del Pesca

‘Dia de Pesca’ (Fishing Day) was created in January 2014 and can be found in Barriada Isabel Simon at the top of Calle de la Teraza on the right hand side where it joins Anenida de Andalucia. This is the second mural by Jose Fernandez Rios and it is one of the biggest murals in Spain, measuring 100 sq.m and covering 6 walls of an apartment block.

Centro de Interpretación de la Arquitectura Tradicional

The Interpretation Center of Traditional Architecture aims to spread the values of traditional architecture in the Sierra de Filabres, especially the slate roof designs seen in the municipalities of Castro de Filabres, Senés and Velefique.

Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen

The church was built from 1640 onwards, opposite the site occupied by the previous Iglesia de Santa María, which was destroyed during the Moorish Rebellion. It was renovated in 1771 according to the project of the architect Francisco Ruiz Garrido de Vera.

Iglesia de la Virgen de las Angustias

The church was built on the site of the former mosque, dating from the sixteenth century. The choir is impressive, created with great originality, and the interior is divided into the main altar (dedicated to the Virgen de las Angustias) and the two side chapels (one in honor of Jesús Nazareno and the other of the Virgen de la Soledad).

Iglesia de Santa María del Rosario

The Mudejar-style church was built in the first half of the seventeenth century and has been restored on several occasions. It was erected in 1505, but disappeared in 1570 after the Moorish Rebellion and the depopulation of the mountains.

Ermita de San Sebastián

The date of the Chapel is unknown, however, it appears in Gérgal’s plan in Pascual Madoz’s “Geographical-Statistical-Historical Dictionary” made between 1845-1850. On its main facade reads the inscription: “Ermita San Sebastián (1734)”.

Plaza de la Constitución

The town square has always been a meeting place for a ball game or conversations. A plaque has stood in the centre giving the square its name since 1881.

Castillo de Gérgal

The historical antecedents of the castle date back to the Muslim era, due to its great strategic value as a place of surveillance at the crossroads that linked Almería with the Sierra de las Filabres. During the Re-conquest, the Christian troops occupied it and demolished it to prevent uprisings.

Observatorio Astronómico Hispano-Alemán de Calar Alto (CAHA)

The Calar Alto Hispano-German Astronomical Observatory is situated in the Sierra de Los Filabres, north of the province of Almería, and is operated jointly by the Max-Planck Institute of Astronomy in Heidelberg (Germany) , and the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (CSIC) in Granada.

Santuario de Monteagud

The Monteagud Sanctuary is dedicated to the Virgen de la Cabeza, a symbol of the Sierra de los Filabres and the spiritual backbone of the entire region. The sanctuary is a religious and recreational space with spectacular views of the sea, desert and mountains.
