Cúllar Vega

Cúllar Vega is unique for having a particularly striking landscape of black poplar trees. It has about 6500 inhabitants.

History

This area of the Granada plain is known by the names Cular, Cúllar de la Vega and Cúllar Vega. The name first appears in a document from the twelfth century. The name Cúllar derives from the Arabic word qûllar, which seems to come from the Latin collum, meaning 'high ground'. This suggests that Cúllar may have originated as a Roman villa. More>

Parroquia Nuestra Señora de la Asunción
This Mudéjar-style church is the result of a blend of Christian and Islamic art. The first recorded mention of it dates back to 1532, the year in which the wood was purchased to begin construction. Two years later, construction began under the direction of master mason Pablo Hernández, and the work was completed in 1540. The church consists of a single, rectangular nave with an altar, fitting the most traditional typology of Mudéjar churches. Located on Calle Iglesia. More>

The cisterns are one of the most prominent features of the town; these being underground reservoirs that store water. Their age and importance have left their mark on the toponymy of the municipality, with a path named after them already appearing in 1572. Situated in the main square, this cistern is preserved, and was responsible for collecting, storing, and distributing water from the Genil and Dílar Rivers. More>
