Cortijo Rural del Guarda
Cortijo Rural del Guarda (The Rural Gamekeeper's Farmhouse) is a restored country house located next to the Genil River. It reflects the area's agricultural heritage, where farmhouses served as the centre of farming estates and provided accommodation for landowners, workers or estate caretakers. Characterised by its rural setting and traditional architecture, the cortijo offers a glimpse into the farming traditions that have shaped the Genil Valley landscape for centuries. Today, it has been converted into a hostel that combines traditional rural architecture with modern accommodation. Surrounded by farmland and open countryside, it provides a peaceful base for exploring the villages, walking routes and natural landscapes of the Poniente Granadino region.
Countryside walks
Ruta Hipponova
Ruta Hipponova (Route 79) is one of Villanueva Mesía’s most spectacular and easy walking routes. Crossing the countryside and passing through farmland, olive groves, and low mountain terrain between the Genil Valley and the foothills of Montefrío, it showcases the region's rich character: a mid-mountain area full of historical, cultural, and monumental references. The number of this itinerary refers to the old Roman settlement believed to have occupied present-day Montefrío. The route is circular, fully signposted with murals and informative posters, as well as direction posts throughout, and is suitable for visitors who want to explore the region's nature and heritage at their own pace.
Ruta Periurbana
The Ruta Periurbana (Peri-urban Route) is a gentle walking route of 6.6kms, with a maximum gradient of 40m. The village remains visible through much of the walk, as the residential centre forms the focal point of the circular route. The trail passes through beautiful landscape, especially in the first section up to the Cortijo de la Verdeja. It then follows a river walk along the right bank of the Genil River, lined with huge poplars and rich flora that provide habitat for a variety of wildlife.
Handicrafts
The traditional craft most closely associated with Villanueva Mesía is esparto work (espartería). Locally available plant fibre was traditionally woven and twisted into practical items such as baskets, mats, ropes, and agricultural tools, reflecting the village's agricultural way of life.
