N-340 to A-7 kilometer conversion tables
At 1,248 km in length, this huge highway from Cadiz to Barcelona was the longest road in Spain. It is colloquially known as the Spanish Route 66, and many have travelled the entire route and written blogs about their adventure.
The former N-340 coastal road was renumbered as the A-7 in the early 2000s. The kilometre markers along the road and at junctions were re-numbered in stages during this period. This significant project was implemented by the Ministry of Transport. While the legacy numbering was not considered a problem locally, it was inconvenient nationally to have two A-7 km 180s, for example. Additionally, with the construction of numerous bypasses over the years, the exit numbers and the actual distances had become out of sync. In any case, the road was renumbered without local consultation or an information campaign.
In the old system, the former N-340 started at Cádiz (0 km), specifically at the junction with the N-IV outside San Fernando. In the new system, the A-7 starts at the French border (0 km). This means that, whereas the numbers previously decreased as you travelled towards Algeciras, they now increase.

Why do we need a conversion table?
We need a conversion table because so many places still use the old system for their address. For example, a campsite in Marbella refers to its location as 'Carretera de Cádiz, N-340, km 194.7'. If you're using a modern GPS or looking out for the road sign to exit the A-7, you'll need to know that the correct exit is km 1030.

A-48 Coverage: The A-48 currently ends at KM 36 (Vejer). For the next 67 kilometers through Tarifa, the road remains the single-carriageway N-340 until it hits the Algeciras bypass.
The Algeciras "Flip": At KM 103, the road transitions into the A-7. Note that the numbering logic changes here: as you continue East toward Málaga, the new A-7 markers will go down (1122 → 1087), while the old N-340 markers would have continued going up (103 → 138).
The Zero Point: Unlike many other national roads that start in Madrid, the N-340's KM 0 is located at the Tres Caminos junction on the NIV of the Madrid to Cadiz road and where Cádiz, Seville, and Málaga-bound traffic intersect.

The A-7 which was the upgraded to dual carriageway and former N-340 along the Costa del Sol west of Fuengirola climbs inland and skirts the Sierra de Mijas and follows a new inland route as far as Almeria city. The former N-340 route has be renamed N-340a and downgraded to a Municipal road and follows the coast through Malaga city, Rincon de la Victoria, Nerja, Almunecar, Salobreña, Mortril, Roquetas del Mar and through Almeria city. Most address on this section have been given local names. The Granada section of the coast, called the Costa Tropical, was the final piece of the Mediterranean motorway (A-7) to be completed. Because of the rugged terrain, the new A-7 often runs significantly inland through tunnels and over massive viaducts, while the original N-340 remains as a scenic coastal route.
East of Almeria city from Balanegra to the Murcia border the A7 is an uprade of the former N-340.

The Almería City Gap: Like in Málaga, the A-7 bypasses the city center. The old route through the city is now often referred to as the N-340a, while the motorway (A-7) stays further inland.
The "Desert" Section: Between Níjar and Vera, the A-7 covers significant ground through the Tabernas desert region. If you are looking for the famous film sets (MiniHollywood), they are actually located on the N-340a at roughly Old KM 464, accessible via the A-92 junction.
Exit Signage: In Almería, the exit numbers have been updated to match the New KM markers. For example, if you are looking for the Roquetas de Mar exit, you will now see Exit 799 (formerly Exit 429).
Key Points to Remember
Directional Flip: In the old system (N-340), numbers went up as you headed East (toward Málaga/Barcelona). In the new system (A-7), numbers go up as you head West (toward Algeciras/Cádiz).
The "Gap" at Málaga: You might notice a jump between Rincón de la Victoria and Málaga City. This is because the A-7 bypass (the "Hiperronda") and the original coastal route have different lengths, and the numbering was adjusted to reflect the most direct motorway path.
The road signs have been updated. GPS Updates: Most modern navigation apps (Google Maps, Waze) have updated to the new kilometer points, but older printed maps or local business addresses might still use the old N-340 references (e.g., "Km 176, N-340").
