Centro de Interpretación de la Seda
After the Cájar City Council acquired the Cueva de las Setas, it was restored as part of the Programme for the Promotion of Agricultural Employment with the participation of the State, the Junta de Andalucía, the Provincial Council and the City Council itself. The interpretation centre comprises five different spaces: ‘Cáxar - Place of Silk in Granada’, ‘Morus Alba’, ‘Alegoría y Tradición’, ‘Etnografía Cajareña’, and ‘Galería Tabourot’.
Cáxar - Place of Silk explores the history of silk in Granada, the world’s major legends of silk, the artistic legacy of the Moors as well as the presence of silk in Cáxar as explained in the 18th century ‘Book of Silk’. Morus Alba explains the cultivation of the mulberry tree in the Vega de Cájar through agricultural implements, tools, and looms used to make silk fabrics, as well as a stove for breeding worms dating back to the 18th century.
Alegoría y Tradición delves into the 14th century Cájar as an Arab farmhouse dedicated to silk cultivation. As a tribute to the Moorish past, the figure of ‘La Sedas’ was created: the protagonist of a local legend and an allegory to the etymology of the municipality. The gallery also houses a 19th century silk tapestry, a 16th century Moorish spinning machine and a recreation of a rural silkworm farm.
The Etnografía Cajareña exhibition showcases objects and pieces donated by local residents relating to customs, life, agriculture, education, local politics, and musical and religious traditions. Galería Tabourot, named after Enrique Tabourot Aupede, hosts temporary exhibitions, courses, study days, silk painting workshops, talks, concerts and small-scale shows. Guided visits, available by appointment only, lasts for approximately 40 minutes. Located on Calle Colón.
