Iglesia de la Encarnación

Iglesia de la Encarnación

The church was built on the site of an early mosque between 1555 and 1560. This mosque was later destroyed by the Moors and its reconstruction was delayed until 1603. The Ermita del Rosario was built in 1617, followed shortly by the Ermita del Buen Suceso. Over time, the church's structure deteriorated, leaving it in a state of ruin by the mid-nineteenth century. Consequently, it was restored in the following decades, during which time the tower and side door were constructed. Between 1876 and 1882, a new nave was opened on each side, partly using the space of the old cemetery. The earthquake of 1884 also caused serious damage, and further repairs were carried out in 1922 by the local craftsmen Máximo Robles and Rafael de Mingorance. It is located on Calle Real.
