Iglesia de la Encarnación

Iglesia de la Encarnación

The church was built on the site of a primitive mosque between 1555 and 1560, which was later destroyed by the Moors, and its reconstruction was delayed until 1603. In 1617 the Ermita del Rosario was built, and shortly after the Ermita del Buen Suceso. Over time the structure of the church suffered, and it was in a state of ruin in the mid-nineteenth century, so in the following decades it was restored and the tower and side door were built. Between 1876 and 1882 a new nave was opened on each side, partly using the space of the old cemetery. The earthquake of 1884 also seriously affected it and again in 1922 new repairs were carried out, in which the masters, Máximo Robles and Rafael de Mingorance, also residents of Lanjarón, worked on them. It is located on Calle Real.
