There is no evidence of a mosque having existed during the Muslim period. In 1492, a parish church in the Mudejar style was built in Purullena by order of the Synod of Guadix. The Synod stated that the churches in Marchal and Purullena, along with the farms in Cúllar, Luchena, Canlar and Casa de Méndez, were under their control. The aforementioned synod ordered the construction of a church on the Luchena farm to serve the religious needs of its inhabitants.
Between 1549 and 1555, the old church in Marchal was built. Ambrosio Villegas was responsible for directing and overseeing the work, for which he was paid 35,379 maravedis. The bricks were purchased from Miguel Loayna in 1553. The church tower was built the following year at a cost of 7,500 maravedis. Blas Calderón was responsible for the locksmithing. Following the destruction of the chapel in a fire in 1943, a parish church was constructed on the site, with Mass initially being held in a designated room in the Palacio de los Gallardo until its completion. The current church retains some Mudéjar features. It has a basilica plan and is covered with a simple barrel vault. It is located on Calle Rambla.
